Mary Fairfax Somerville was a world-renowned mathematician, geographer, science writer and theoretical astronomer. The inventor/astronomer/mathematician Sir David Brewster called her “certainly the most extraordinary woman in Europe.” She is also responsible for the coining of a word.
In 1834 the British intellectual William Whewell ran into a problem when writing a review of one of Somerville’s books. At that time practitioners of science were called “men of science.” Because he couldn’t very well refer to Mary Somerville as a “man of science” he needed another term. So, he invented one: “scientist.”
In one sense, therefore, we might say that Mary Somerville was the world’s first scientist.
Mary Fairfax Somerville died on November 29, 1872, one hundred fifty-one years ago today.

Happy birthday David
May 2022
Dear David,
It is with great pleasure that Denoyer-Geppert has the opportunity to wish you a very happy 41st birthday.
We love that you are a life long fan of Denoyer-Geppert maps!
You probably know we have been around a long time - since 1916, but did you know that Mr. Denoyer, the cartographer / editor was born in Milwaukee in 1875? In 1909 he was appointed the first professor of Geology and Geography at the State Teaching College Lacrosse (University of Wisconsin) where he met Mr. Geppert who was a salesman for Nystrom Map Co.
Mr. Geppert convinced Mr. Denoyer to join Nystrom and in 1916 Denoyer and Geppert became an unstoppable team! The two went on to produce maps, globes, anatomical models and many innovative teaching accoutrements throughout the years.
I don’t know how many maps you have seen or own, but in 1922 there were 1,200 maps, charts and globes for teaching geography and history in the Denoyer-Geppert series. That is alot of maps!
We hope you continue your life long passion of learning, sharing and collecting these fine products. May you continue to enjoy them with enthusiasm.
Sincerely,
Mary C. Andros, President Sharing the Knowl
