GREEN THUMB - Andrea Fraga, of Middle Island Gardens, at right, helps students, enrolled in the Sitka Parks and Recreation's Sitka Summer Camp, plant vegetable seeds in the Pacific High School greenhouse Tuesday. The campers will harvest crops and make a salad by the end of camp. The first session of the camp for students aged 6 to 12 is full, but other programs are open and listed through links on the city website, cityofsitka.com.

Your idea could help make downtown Sitka safer for everyone.

Entry forms for the Crosswalk Safety Design Ideas Project are now available at both the Sitka Public Library and City Hall. Pick up a form, sketch your idea, and help create a temporary crosswalk safety demonstration project on Lincoln Street.

We're looking for earth-tone geometric patterns that help draw attention to existing crosswalks and promote pedestrian safety downtown. No artistic experience is required, and there is no limit to the number of entries you can submit.

~Pick up an entry form at City Hall or the Sitka Public Library
~Download one at www.cityofsitka.com/DesignIdeas
~Return completed forms to City Hall, the Library, or email them to [email protected]

Entries are due by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24.

This project grew out of Sitka's participation in the Walkability Action Institute, a grant-funded program focused on improving walkability and pedestrian safety. Selected designs will be showcased at Harrigan Centennial Hall on June 25 at 6:00 p.m., and may be incorporated into a temporary demonstration project later this summer.

Take a look at the display the next time you're at City Hall or the Library.

Every Tuesday from 4 to 5 PM, the Sitka Homeless Coalition distributes meals at AC Lakeside. The organization purchases gift cards to cover the cost of meals from our local bakery/deli, and AC Lakeside contributes additional funds toward each card. This longstanding partnership helps feed anywhere from 20-30 individuals every week.

Thank you to the staff and volunteers at the Sitka Homeless Coalition for your continued efforts to support our community. To learn more about how you can help, visit sheltersitka.org.
