PRESCRIBED BURN 5/6/26: The Sisters Ranger District plans to implement a prescribed fire on up to 244 acres approximately 3 miles West of Sisters near the Cow Camp Campground on Wednesday, 05/06/26. The legal location is: Township 15, Range 9, Section 11. Operations will begin as early as 09:00 AM, and will continue until ignitions are complete, or conditions become unfavorable.
This treatment is part of the Sisters Area Fuels Reduction project and is intended to reduce hazardous fuels in the wildland-urban interface and return forest stands to historic conditions by reintroducing fire on the landscape. Central Oregon’s forests are adapted to frequent low-intensity fires. These prescribed burn units are strategically located in places that could be used to stop a potential wildfire in the future.
What does this mean for you?
• During prescribed burns, smoke may settle in low-lying areas overnight.
• All residents are encouraged to close windows at night to avoid smoke impacts.
• When driving in smoky areas, drivers should slow down and turn on headlights.
• If you have heart or lung disease, asthma, or other chronic conditions, ask your doctor about how to protect yourself from smoke.
• Go to centraloregonfire.org to learn more about smoke safety and prescribed burning in Central Oregon.

PRESCRIBED BURN 5/6/26 (WEDNESDAY):
Prescribed Burning Planned For Wednesday in Multiple Locations
Central Oregon, May 5, 2026 — Firefighters on the Deschutes National Forest are planning prescribed burning on the Bend-Fort Rock, Crescent and Sisters Ranger Districts on Wednesday if conditions are favorable.
Firefighters on the Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District plan to continue conducting up to 2008 acres of prescribed burning on the Pine Mountain Prescribed Burn located on Pine Mountain 14 miles southeast of Bend. Ignitions are slated for up to 659 acres on Wednesday and will continue through Friday if conditions remain favorable.
Ignitions are planned for 9:30 a.m. Smoke will be highly visible from Highway 20, Bend and the surrounding area. Residual smoke will be visible following ignitions. Residents in the Pine Mountain area are encouraged to keep doors and windows closed to minimize smoke impacts. Smoke impacts are most likely overnight and in the early morning hours.
The Pine Mountain area is temporarily closed to traffic, including off-highway vehicles and paragliding. Forest Service Road 2017 is closed as well as the Pine Mountain Campground and dispersed recreation opportunities. Closures will remain in place for multiple days while mop-up and patrol operations continue after the prescribed burn is complete. Firefighters will reopen roads and recreation sites once conditions have been assessed and are determined safe for the public.
Firefighters on the Sisters Ranger District plan to conduct 244 acres of ignitions on the SAFR 263/264 Prescribed Burn units located three miles west of Sisters and a quarter mile southwest of Crossroads subdivision.
Ignitions are planned for 8:30 a.m. Smoke will be visible from Sisters and the surrounding area. There may be some smoke impacts to Forest Service Road 15 and Highway 242. People driving along Forest Service Road 15 should slow down and use caution as firefighting personnel will be working along the roadway and there will be smoke impacts.
Residents in the Crossroads subdivision, Sisters and the surrounding area are encouraged to keep doors and windows closed to minimize smoke impacts. Smoke impacts are most likely overnight and in the early morning hours.
The Metolius-Windigo Trail will be closed where it intersects the prescribed burn units.
The Crescent Ranger District plans to conduct 238 acres of ignitions on the RP 3000 and DMR 3 Prescribed Burn units located five miles southeast of Crescent.
Ignitions are planned for 9:30 a.m. Smoke will be visible from Highway 97. Residents in Crescent are encouraged to keep doors and windows closed to minimize smoke impacts. Smoke impacts are most likely overnight and in the early morning hours.
Prescribed burns can protect homes from tragic wildfires. Fire management officials work with Oregon Department of Forestry smoke specialists to plan prescribed burns. Prescribed burns are conducted when weather is most likely to move smoke up and away from our communities. While prescribed fire managers take significant preventive measures, it’s likely that communities may experience some smoke during or immediately after a prescribed burn.
What does this mean for you?
During prescribed burns, smoke may settle in low-lying areas overnight and in the early morning hours.
All residents are encouraged to close doors and windows at night to avoid smoke impacts.
If available, use a portable air cleaner. Air cleaners work best running with doors and windows closed. You can also create a DIY air cleaner.
If you have a central air system, use it to filter air. Use high-efficiency filters if possible.
When driving in smoky areas, drivers should slow down, turn on headlights and turn air to recirculating.
If you have heart or lung disease, asthma, or other chronic conditions, pay attention to how you feel and if symptoms of heart or lung disease worsen, consider contacting your health care professional.
