When planning a 605 Sprinter Van Trip to Yankton last July, Brittany Wagner of Yankton Thrive wanted every stop to represent a different side of the town.
“Some locations highlighted outdoor adventure and recreation, while others focused on local flavor, history, shopping, or entertainment,” said the director of tourism. “We also wanted places that created memorable experiences for visitors, whether that was waterfront views, unique dining experiences, or hidden gems locals love.”

"The Official Guide to Local Flavor" officially released this past February, and already has had such a demand Southeast South Dakota's Amy Bailey says the non-profit will launch an additional run this fall. Guides are distributed throughout the region for free at high-traffic locations like visitor centers, hotels, attractions, and at businesses who are featured in the guide (along with being online).

Visitors can literally step inside history with the Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Homes tours, thanks to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society.
The Discovery Center is open June through August and is a space for non-digital play. Children can dress up in prairie costumes, play house with a cast-iron stove, pretend to do the wash, and “attend” school.
