I have to give a shoutout to my 5 year old daughter yesterday during the severe weather in Sioux Falls. Once the outdoor warning siren went off she went “Okay, Daddy, time to go into the bathroom!” (our lowest interior room away from windows)

It pays to practice these drills!

Check out this incredible view of the storm before it moved into Menno on Sunday!

Menno had 80+ mph wind gusts as a result of Sunday’s storm.

ISOLATED SEVERE HAIL AND DAMAGING WIND GUSTS POSSIBLE

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is not likely, but those in this area need to be on the lookout for that hail threat. This will weaken quite a bit after 8:00 tonight.

ISOLATED SEVERE STORMS THROUGH THIS EARLY EVENING ⛈️

Keep an eye out in northwest Iowa for another threat for some large hail and damaging wind gusts. This won’t be anywhere near as intense as last night, but still… keep an eye to the sky!

Meanwhile, in western South Dakota… ❄️

That’s how you know this is a strong area of low pressure moving in when it’s bringing this significant of a cool down!

SUNDAY’S STORM REPORTS

Here’s a look at the tornado, hail, and wind reports that were received. The storm really intensified as it moved into north Iowa and produced multiple tornadoes.

In southeast South Dakota, we definitely dealt with a lot of the wind element to the storms.

SEVERE WEATHER THREAT RETURNS TO THE MIDWEST TODAY

Make sure you’re monitoring the forecast today as we’re going to be seeing more severe weather across the region. We will be missing out on a majority of it locally, but some isolated severe storms will be possible in northwest Iowa.

The better ingredients will be toward Des Moines, Omaha, and extending into Kansas.

Make sure you have ways to receive warnings and stay safe today!

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone behind the scenes at Dakota News Now (and of course our entire weather team!) for all of the hard work from yesterday’s severe weather event. It takes a crew (many of whom you don’t see) to make sure that we are able to provide you with the up to date information whether it’s on the air or digitally to keep you safe. That’s what you can rely on in situations like last night!

Also, a special thank you to those that either sent photos or videos or just tuned in here if you were away from your TVs. In today’s day of technology it’s crucial to be able to reach people in different manners to relay the message of safety during severe weather. I hope there isn’t much damage to clean up today wherever you may be.

Have a great Monday!
