📚🌱No Quick Fix 🌱📚 Tutoring is not a quick fix. It’s a marathon and not a sprint. Staying the course is a big commitment for families and students…and the tutor! But, once the wheels start turning and the pace is set, the magic starts to happen.

If you’re a new follower, here are some fun facts about me and Pathways:
📚My days are busy with an almost full time job as a reading interventionist
📚I currently serve five students in private afternoon tutoring sessions
📚I do plan to run my summer intensive program again this summer!

I wish I could clone myself and take on more students, because I love private tutoring. I am so proud of the kids I work with and so grateful for their grown ups who put their trust in me.

Pathways’ plan going forward is to serve striving readers, advocate for best reading practices in primary grades, and support my teacher friends who want to journey with me in bringing accessible literacy instruction to EVERY. SINGLE. CHILD.

That’s NON SENSE!!! A little syllable mix up fun 📚🌱

Why put emphasis on nonsense words? They are amazing stepping stones to decoding multi syllabic words!

These types of texts are so important for developing readers!

Multiple, multisensory exposures to the code are so beneficial!

Do you have a reader who is working on fluency? Here’s a great strategy I adopted from and put my Project Write spin on.

Color code the sentence based on:
❔Who (subject)
❔Did what (predicate)
❔Where (expander)
Next, have your student scoop the phrases together as they read. You’re hitting soooo many skills this way-grammar, fluency, and comprehension!

Did you know the brain decodes words using a process called orthographic mapping?

Orthographic mapping is the metal process used to permanently store words for easy retrieval.

How do you strengthen this process?
By using oral language, connect the sounds of words to the printed symbols (letters/graphemes) that represent the sounds!

For example, the word moth has 4 graphemes (letters) but only 3 sounds (phonemes). This student first heard the word “moth” and identified the sounds. After, the student blended the sounds by looking at the printed word.

Reading IS rocket science 🚀 and is actually not a natural process. We have to train our brains by using methods like mapping words.

Pathways is in week 2 of our intensive summer session. I’m seeing gains after just a few lessons!

Reading actually is 🚀 rocket science. Each student has unique needs.

As a reading interventionist I take a lot of quick data and make quick decisions on how best to serve my readers.

I also do a ton of planning. Each student at Pathways gets an individual plan. It’s a lot of work, a lot of fun, and brings me such joy 🌱📚
