β¨ Ballistoides conspicillum β Clown Triggerfish β¨
π Description
Ballistoides conspicillum, commonly known as the Clown Triggerfish, is one of the most visually dramatic and recognizable marine fish in the aquarium trade. Its bold patternβblack body covered with large white spots, a bright yellow mouth, and striking white markingsβgives it a truly unique appearance. While undeniably beautiful, this species is highly aggressive and territorial, making it suitable only for experienced aquarists and species-specific or carefully planned predator tanks.
π Natural Habitat
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including areas such as the Red Sea, East Africa, Indonesia, and the Great Barrier Reef, Ballistoides conspicillum inhabits lagoons and outer reef slopes. Juveniles are often found in sheltered reef areas, while adults prefer deeper, open zones with rocky substrates and coral formations.
π Tank Size
Due to its size, activity level, and aggressive behavior, a large aquarium is essential:
πͺΈ Minimum tank size: 600β800 liters (160β210 gallons)
π Aquascape: sturdy rock structures with caves and open swimming space
π Stability: a mature, well-established aquarium is required
This species grows large and can become increasingly aggressive with age, requiring ample territory.
π§ Water Parameters
Thrives in stable, high-quality marine conditions:
π‘ Temperature: 24β27Β°C (75β81Β°F)
β Salinity: 1.023β1.026
π Nitrates: < 20 ppm
π· pH: 8.1β8.4
π€ Feeding
Carnivorous and opportunistic feeder:
π¦ Meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and mussels
π High-quality frozen preparations for marine predators
π¦ Hard-shelled foods (e.g., crustaceans) to help wear down teeth
πͺΈ Reef Compatibility
β Not reef safe
Ballistoides conspicillum will prey on crustaceans, mollusks, and may damage corals. It is not suitable for reef aquariums and is best kept in fish-only systems.

Lobophyllia sp. β Brain root Coral
π Description
Lobophyllia sp. is a large polyp stony (LPS) coral known for its impressive fleshy lobes and bold, undulating structure. Its thick tissue forms rounded ridges and valleys, giving it a pronounced βbrain-likeβ appearance. Highly sought after for its vibrant coloration, it can display shades of red, green, orange, pink, purple, and metallic hues, often with striking contrasts between the ridges and valleys. Its movement and inflation add a dynamic presence to any reef aquarium.
π Habitat
Native to the reefs of the Indo-Pacific, Lobophyllia sp. is commonly found on reef slopes and lagoon areas, often resting on sandy bottoms or attached to rocky substrates. It typically inhabits areas with moderate light and gentle water movement, where it can expand fully without being exposed to harsh conditions.
π§ Water Parameters
Stable water quality is key to maintaining healthy tissue and coloration:
π‘ Temperature: 75β79Β°F (24β26Β°C)
β Salinity: 1.025
π Alkalinity: 8β9 dKH
𦴠Calcium: 420β450 ppm
π· Magnesium: 1300β1400 ppm
π Nutrients: Moderate nutrient levels are beneficial; avoid ultra-low nutrient systems to support optimal growth and coloration.
πΏ Feeding
Although Lobophyllia sp. relies on photosynthesis through its symbiotic zooxanthellae, it greatly benefits from supplemental feeding. It readily accepts meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, or specialized coral foods. Target feeding, especially in the evening when feeding tentacles are extended, promotes faster growth, thicker tissue, and enhanced coloration.
π Lighting
Prefers moderate lighting. Too much light can cause stress, bleaching, or tissue recession. Placement in the middle to lower areas of the aquarium is recommended, with gradual acclimation when introducing the coral to brighter conditions.
π Water Flow
Moderate, indirect flow is ideal. Strong, direct flow can damage its fleshy tissue, while too little flow may allow debris to settle. A gentle, variable current helps keep the coral clean and encourages natural expansion.
