People over 70 generally should not get a puppy.

Not because they shouldn’t have a dog, because they shouldn’t have a puppy.

Puppies are basically infants.

They need:
•constant supervision
•structure
•potty training
•socialization
•obedience training
•excercise
•patience

That’s a lot to ask of anyone.

If you’re over 70 and you’re absolutely certain you’re ready for that challenge, go for it.

But for most people, I think the better choice is a 2 to 3-year-old dog from a rescue or shelter.

You skip the hardest part.

You still get the companionship.

And there are thousands of great dogs, waiting for homes right now.

I know this opinion won’t be popular with everyone.

But after years of working with puppies and puppy owners, that’s what I believe.

Most people think obedience is just about teaching a dog what TO DO.

The real magic happens when you teach them what NOT to do.

This is Uni demonstrating impulse control before being released to do her favorite thing in the world-run free on the golf course.

She knows exactly what’s coming.

She wants it!

She is excited about it!

And she still waits patiently until she hears her release cue: “FREE”

Training isn’t about restriction and control.

Training is about COMMUNICATION and EARNED FREEDOM.

Look how happy she is!

The more impulse control your dog has, the more freedom they can safely enjoy.

Uni is 2.5 years old now, but this process started when she was a puppy and has been practiced consistently ever since.

This is why I introduce recall at eight weeks old.

The first clip is Puppy Magnum learning the foundation of “come” with my son Jack using the hand signal and making it a great event when Magnum comes over and sits in front of him.

No pressure.
No confusion.
Just clarity, excitement, and repetition.

Fast forward five years…

Now Magnum is responding to “sit”, “down” and “come” from 100 yards away before sprinting back and sitting directly in front of me - tail wagging the entire journey.

That type of recall doesn’t happen by accident.

It starts early.
It gets practiced often.
And it gets proof through years of real world distractions.

Recall is the most important thing I teach.

Because freedom has to be earned.
