Not Just a Pardon, but a Purpose

Reading: Ezekiel 34:11-16; Luke 15:3-7; 1 Peter 2:24-25

Devotional: After each of the three times Jesus asked Peter whether he loved him, he followed the question with a commission. Feed my lambs. Tend my sheep. Feed my sheep. Jesus was not simply forgiving Peter and sending him on his way. He was restoring him to a purpose greater than Peter could have imagined for himself. This is the pattern of God. He does not pardon and abandon. He pardons and then promotes. The sheep he entrusts to us are his own. We are under-shepherds serving the great shepherd described in Ezekiel 34. Your failure does not disqualify your calling. In Christ, it often deepens it.

Reflection: What purpose or calling have you set aside because you felt disqualified by past failure? How does the pattern of Peter's restoration challenge the way you think about your own usefulness to God?

Practical Application: Reach out to one person in your life who may be wandering or struggling. You do not need to have all the answers. Simply show up, ask a meaningful question, and point them toward Christ.

The Wound That Must Be Cleaned

Reading: Psalm 32:1-7; 1 John 1:7-9; Romans 8:1-4

Devotional: Restoration is not always comfortable. When Jesus asked Peter the same question three times, Peter was grieved. The Greek word used means he was pained and filled with sorrow. Jesus was not being cruel. He was cleaning the wound. A wound covered without being cleaned will become infected. The pain of confronting what we have done is not punishment. It is the beginning of genuine healing. God does not bandage over unresolved sin and shame. He draws it into the light because that is the only place where true healing can occur. The cleaning hurts. But what follows the cleaning is freedom.

Reflection: Are there wounds in your spiritual life that have been covered rather than cleaned? What have you been hoping would simply go away on its own without being fully brought before God?

Practical Application: Spend time in honest, specific confession today. Do not speak in generalities. Name what needs to be named before God, trusting the promise in 1 John 1:9 that he is faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse.

Devotional: Jesus did not interrogate Peter about his failure. He did not demand an explanation, an apology, or a promise of better behavior. He asked one penetrating question: do you love me? This is the heart of the entire gospel. God does not begin with your performance. He begins with your heart. The question is not whether you have been faithful enough, spiritual enough, or disciplined enough. The question is whether you love him. Everything else flows from the answer to that question. Obedience, service, and restoration are not the starting point. Love is. It has always been love, from the very beginning.

Reflection: If Jesus sat across from you today and asked, "Do you love me more than these?" what would the word "these" represent in your own life? What competes most directly with your love for Christ?

Practical Application: Identify one thing that has been receiving more of your attention, energy, and affection than your relationship with Christ. Intentionally redirect time and focus toward him this week, even in one small and specific way.

The Fire of Failure and the God Who Meets You There

Reading: John 18:15-18; John 21:9-14

Devotional: Peter warmed himself at a charcoal fire the night he denied Christ three times. It was not a coincidence that Jesus later built another charcoal fire on the shores of Galilee. God does not avoid the scenes of our greatest failures. He walks directly into them. He does not ask you to clean yourself up before approaching him. He already knows where you have been, what you have done, and what it cost you. The fire is not a reminder of your shame. In the hands of Christ, it becomes the place where your restoration begins. He meets you exactly there.

Reflection: Where in your life have you been avoiding God because of shame or failure? What would it look like to allow him to meet you in that specific place today?

Practical Application: Write down one area of failure or shame you have been carrying. Bring it before God in prayer, acknowledging that he already knows and is already present in that place with you.
