I often hear people ask why we need Black History Month. Of course, I have something to say...
Black History Month is not to show that we are better than anyone else. It is a celebration to show that we are! We are business owners, inventors, teachers, doctors, kings, queens, speakers, actors, comedians, white and blue collar workers, etc. We are not slaves, we were enslaved. When given the opportunity, we rise to the challenge. We live in a country where the disenfranchisement of black people is so common that many (even some of us) have forgotten that we are just as good as everyone else. So do not attempt to belittle this celebration, this time of re-education, this time to look back and gain strength for the future. This month reminds people that we matter, we exist and we have contributed voluntarily and involuntarily to the lifestyle that is enjoyed in this country!
