As many Americans joyously celebrate the nation’s Independence Day today, so many of us ironically feel a sense of emptiness.

For me, I feel called to honor our Ancestors in a “rebellious” yet intentional act of self-preservation and rememberance that while many observe today as a day of independence, today also marks the intentional continuation of one of the most barbaric forms of oppression that originated in one of these homes, continued across one of the largest bodies of water in the world and long after July 4th, 1776.

So today my heart is with my Ancestors, today my mind is rooted in honoring my experience in Senegal and my love goes out to everyone who is experiencing conflicting feelings about what this day represents.

For years, I’ve loved photographing doors as I’ve always viewed them as more than entryways but openings to different worlds, portals and experiences.

So many come to Gorée Island, Senegal to see the “Door of No Return” but I wonder if people ever come and admire the doors of everyday returns, of every day people and of everyday life.
