I heard a loud crash in my backyard at 7:30 on a Saturday morning.

When I looked outside, my fence was gone.

Not damaged.
Not leaning.

Gone.

And standing where my fence had been was my neighbor, Karen, directing two workers like she owned the place.

I ran outside and yelled, “What the hell are you doing?!”

She turned around, completely calm.

“Oh, good. You're awake,” she said. “We're finally fixing the parking situation.”

I stared at her.

“Our parking situation?”

She pointed toward my backyard.

Apparently, she had decided the empty strip of land behind my house was actually hers—and she planned to turn it into a private parking area for her family.

I told her to stop immediately.

She laughed.

Then she pulled out her phone and showed me something that made my stomach drop.

“See?” she said. “I've already paid for everything.”

I looked at the screen.

Then I noticed the address on the permit...

And that's when I realized Karen had made a very expensive mistake.
I took the phone from her and looked at the permit again.

The address wasn't mine.

It wasn't hers either.

It belonged to a property three houses down.

I looked at Karen.

“You seriously got a permit for somebody else's property?”

She snatched her phone back.

“That doesn't matter. The boundaries around here are confusing.”

“Confusing?” I said. “You just demolished my fence!”

She rolled her eyes and told the workers to keep going.

That's when I called the police.

Karen immediately started yelling that I was harassing her and “blocking a neighborhood improvement project.”

But when the officer arrived, he didn't even look at me first.

He walked over to Karen and asked one simple question:

“Ma'am, whose property are you standing on?”

Her confidence disappeared.
