I have just watched one of my favorite groups, Step Afrika, dance in the virtual world premiere of Stono inspired by the Stono rebellion of September 9,1739. Not only is the performance absolutely riveting, it is also an incredible tool for teaching about essential African and black history, dance, music, and the connections between past rebellions, resistance, and protests for black emancipation and freedom and how they are related to our more current protests in the Black Lives Matter movement. The performance itself is half hour.

There is a panel discussion afterwords that is eye opening, incredibly informative and helps to draw the connections necessary for all of us to better understand these links and this essential history. It will be available for only one more week. I forward this to you for yourselves and also for the possibility that it could be used in school classes too. It would spark amazing conversations.
