Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month.

WELCOME TO OUR HISPANIC HERITAGE HIGHLIGHT SR. PADILLA!

I was born in San Miguel, El Salvador. My father came to the United States on a sponsored visa due to his job, and eventually we followed him in 1983. We flew in through Miami airport and then to Silver Spring, Md where my Father and several other family members had established themselves.I still fondly remember the downtown Silver Spring of my youth.

The very first thing I wanted to be when I grew up was a Football Player. I went to Woodlin Elementary School, then on to Sligo Middle School and eventually on to Albert Einstein High School. I then went to the University of Maryland - College Park where I earned my degree in Spanish Language and Literature. I started with Montgomery County Public Schools as a long term sub before being hired as a media assistant in an Elementary School.

I was accepted into the ACET program through Montgomery College where I earned my teaching certificate for Spanish. I have taught Spanish at Roberto Clemente MS, Gaithersburg MS and am now at Briggs Chaney MS. In 2018 I earned my Master's degree in Education Leadership.I currently serve as the 8th grade Team Leader and Spanish teacher here at BCMS and someday hope to be an administrator.

WELCOME TO OUR HISPANIC HERITAGE HIGHLIGHT SRA. HERNANDEZ ARREAZA!

I am a Venezuelan who is proud to be Latina and in love with our culture, which is why I am grateful and happy to be a Spanish teacher at Briggs Chaney Middle School.

I have a bachelor's degree in education and another in communication. I was a university professor; in 2013, my husband, my daughter, and I moved to Rockville because of my husband's job. While there, I started working as a teacher and studied for a master's degree to teach Spanish as a second language to work in MCPS, where I began in 2017.

I love my profession and am passionate about seeing the learning capacity of my students. It's like an act of magic when I see their faces light up when they realize they have learned Spanish. Because of those faces, because I know how much they are capable of learning, I love being here, and I hope we can meet soon.

🪅Did you know that it is Hispanic Heritage Month? Originally, Hispanic Heritage Month was Hispanic Heritage Week which started in 1968 under President Johnson. In 1988, President Reagan enacted a public law to celebrate a 30 day Hispanic Heritage Month which starts on September 15, the Independence Day of five central American countries. What are you doing to celebrate?
