In 2009, getting a swimmable fabric mermaid tail was extremely difficult. The modern, accessible market of stretchy spandex and built-in monofins did not yet exist. If you wanted a fabric tail, you were largely limited to making a DIY creation yourself or seeking out a custom artisan.
Silicone mermaid tails were highly guarded Hollywood props — like those used in the show “H₂O: Just Add Water; “ and the movies “Splash” and “Hook.
