CUTTING OUT A STEER, circa 1915. What a shot! The capture displayed the dust kicked up by the horse and steer at Spear Brothersโ range leased on the Crow Reservation in Eastern Montana. Although sold by L.A. Huffman, author Gene Allen has discovered that the shot was almost certainly photographed by area-resident Herbert Thompson. The scan was from an 8x14 inch collotype, commercially printed for Huffman at about seven cents each.
Although various Internet sites identify the rider as a Black cowboy, the rider, Phil Spear, was not a Black American. Research is often needed to uncover the authenticity and stories of Huffman images. Prints sold by Huffman included numerous outsourced collotypes. Although quality was good, the collotypes have values that are much less than prints individually made in Huffmanโs darkroom. Text and digital sharpening of photo by Gary Coffrin.

"Each soul must meet the morning sun, the new sweet earth and the Great Silence alone!" --Ohiyesa (Dr. Charles A. Eastman), SANTEE SIOUXโ The most important thing we can do during the course of the day is pray in the morning. There is a special time in the morning that has great power. This is the exact time the sun is rising. During the rising of the sun, everything on the Earth is waking up. Animals, plants, birds and humans will be blessed at the rising of the sun. This is a special time to help us prepare for the day. During this time we ask the Creator to bless our day. We ask Him to guide us, to protect us and to give us courage to overcome the day's obstacles. Doing this everyday will give us knowledge of God's will for us. Grandfather, Grandmother, guide my path. Let my thinking be guided by You.

A NORTHERN CHEYENNE man posed in the frame of a sweat lodge in Eastern Montana for peripatetic photographer L.A. Huffman, probably 1905. Identified as Pretty Bird, the man was waiting for a helper to cover the frame with hides and pass him gourds of water to sprinkle on the hot stones. He would later, perhaps days later, plunge into a nearby creek at the end of his rite of purification. Behind the lodge were additional rocks and sage. Meat was hung for drying between two tepees. If using a PC, click image to enlarge/clarify.
The seminal volumes on L.A. Huffman were The Frontier Years (1955) and Before Barbed Wire (1956). Either is usually available for less than $20 on Amazon, eBay, or AbeBooks. Text and digital sharpening of photo by Gary Coffrin.

Native Tribes of North America Mapped

The ancestors of living Native Americans arrived in North America about 15 thousand years ago. As a result, a wide diversity of communities, societies, and cultures finally developed on the continent over the millennia.
The population figure for Indigenous peoples in the Americas before the 1492 voyage of Christopher Columbus was 70 million or more.
About 562 tribes inhabited the contiguous U.S. territory. Ten largest North American Indian tribes: Arikara, Cherokee, Iroquois, Pawnee, Sioux, Apache, Eskimo, Comanche, Choctaw, Cree, Ojibwa, Mohawk, Cheyenne, Navajo, Seminole, Hope, Shoshone, Mohican, Shawnee, Miโkmaq, Paiute, Wampanoag, Ho-Chunk, Chumash, Haida.
Below is the tribal map of Pre-European North America.
The old map below gives a Native American perspective by placing the tribes in full flower ~ the โGlory Days.โ It is pre-contact from across the eastern sea or, at least, before that contact seriously affected change. Stretching over 400 years, the time of contact was quite different from tribe to tribe. For instance, the โGlory Daysโ of the Maya and Aztec came to an end very long before the interior tribes of other areas, with some still resisting almost until the 20th Century.
At one time, numbering in the millions, the native peoples spoke close to 4,000 languages.
The Americasโ European conquest, which began in 1492, ended in a sharp drop in the Native American population through epidemics, hostilities, ethnic cleansing, and slavery.
When the United States was founded, established Native American tribes were viewed as semi-independent nations, as they commonly lived in communities separate from white immigrants.

SIGNAL BUTTE was used by soldiers at Fort Keogh for relaying messages by HELIOGRAPH (a mirrored device used to flash sunlight) to the Black Hills in Dakota Territory, 175 miles southeast. That fact explains Signal Butteโs name.
Located three miles SE of Miles City, Signal Butte at 3,051 feet is 700 feet above Fort Keogh and Miles City. The base of Signal Butte had coal deposits, and was among the many local sites used for surface mining before natural gas was available. The postcard dates from about 1910. Col. Nelson Miles, Fort Keogh's commander, started using heliographs prior to 1880, 30 years before the photo. See the first comment for a picture of Army heliographs.

๐๐จ๐ฅ๐๐ฌ (Ashishishe) was among the six Crow and 26 Arikara (Ree) scouts who served in 1876 under Custer at the June 25 Battle of the Little Bighorn in Eastern Montana. Curly was the last U.S. Army employee to see Custer alive and was the first to reach the steamship Far West with news of Custerโs annihilation.
Capt. Grant Marsh piloted the Far West with 52 of Major Renoโs wounded to Fort Lincoln (Bismarck, ND) in 54 hours. Stories of Custerโs defeat were then telegraphed to a stunned nation during its July 1776โ1876 Centennial week. The photo, from about 1880, was part of the D.F. Barry collection held by Denver Public Library. Text and Photoshop retouching by Gary Coffrin.

During April 1876, Col. John Gibbon, commander of 7th Infantry troops from Montanaโs Fort Ellis and Fort Shaw, had recruited 25 scouts from Crow Indian Agency. On June 21, Gibbon's men rendezvoused with Gen. Alfred Terry's Dakota Column at Rosebud Creek. Curly, the youngest, and five other Crow scouts were assigned to Custer, who served under Gen. Terry.
White journalists reported โquotationsโ that were unlikely to have been said by Curly. As with the famous surrender speech by Nez Perce Chief Joseph the Younger, much of what was reportedly said was the work of writersโ imaginations.
Clay dust colored his hair and his braids were wrapped in fur. Curly wore loop earrings. The portrait, although part of D.F. Barryโs collection, might have been by O.S. Goff, who originally taught photography to Barry. When Curly scouted in 1876, he had been merely a teenager. Circa 1880 or a bit later seems a reasonable estimate for the photoโs date.
The portrait above was preserved on a glass plate negative using the collodion wet plate process. The cameraโs slow shutter showed some blur from Curleyโs slight movements. The DPLโs scan file revealed expert retouching to the negative. I did a bit of Photoshop cleaning and sharpening, but the source file was so good that I cannot call my version a restoration. Birmingham was born in San Antonio, Texas. His family moved frequently during his childhood, due to his father's career in the military. He learned to play the guitar at an early age and considers music his "first love". After obtaining a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California, he worked as a petrochemical engineer before becoming an actor. In the early 1980s, a talent scout spotted Birmingham at a local gym, where he had been bodybuilding and entering bodybuilding contests. This led to his first acting experience, in a music video for Diana Ross, for her 1982 hit song "Muscles". After appearing in Ross' music video, Birmingham began to pursue acting as his primary career. He studied acting with Larry Moss and Charles Conrad. In 1986, Birmingham made his television debut on an episode of the series Riptide. By 2002, he had a recurring role as the character Oz in the medical drama Body & Soul, starring Peter Strauss. In 2005, he was cast as the older Dogstar in the Steven Spielberg six-part miniseries Into the West. He recently played a Texas ranger a ranger, in Hell or High Water, opposite Jeff Bridges.
