It is good to keep the promises we make to ourselves to enjoy a peaceful hour. How long has it been? How long has it been since we walked on a grassy hillside and watched the shadows hover and move? Walking is good for the legs - but it does wonders for the soul. The autumn season is one of the best times to walk and think. There is a rhythm in the earth that rises into our feet when we walk. In it is the healing and it centers the soul so that the cares of the world cannot get in to destroy peace. And peace has so many side effects. It restores youth and gives perspective to a world-weary mind. ~ The Great Spirit made these mountains and rivers for us, and all this land. ~

On rare occasions you may have felt a word drop into your heart that you knew meant something because it never faded and always stood as a reminder that something profound happened. You may not have understood then, but your mind has gone back to it numerous times, wondering what it meant. Years can pass between an event and the understanding of it. It may be we have to grow up to it, or our minds and spirits have to mature enough to see how it is to play out in our lives. It is little different from building a house, you can see the structure going up, but you know it can't be used until it is finished. Sometimes ideas and visions need time to firm up before we can use them. ~ The designs of Providence, in the course of events, are mysterious.... ~

Vocal inflections by instrumentalists always catch my ear. Jon-Erik Kellso, my favorite living trumpet player, just nailed the Bubber Miley passage in a song Duke Ellington released in 1926. Mute work dates back to Joe โ€˜Kingโ€™ Oliver and the earliest years of recorded jazz.

Vince Giordano and the Nitehawks, the group in the video, now play early jazz two nights per week at BOND 45 Downstairs in NYC. Jon-Erik Kellso and his small group play Sunday afternoons at NYCโ€™s Ear Inn. If I am not restoring Old West photos or reading history, I am often listening to jazz.

Why Isnโ€™t This Map in the History Books?
Native Tribes of North America Mapped

https://usateeprints75.com/native-american-maps-super-sharp
The ancestors of living Native Americans arrived in North America about 15 thousand years ago. As a result, a wide diversity of communities, societies, and cultures finally developed on the continent over the millennia.
The population figure for Indigenous peoples in the Americas before the 1492 voyage of Christopher Columbus was 70 million or more.
About 562 tribes inhabited the contiguous U.S. territory. Ten largest North American Indian tribes: Arikara, Cherokee, Iroquois, Pawnee, Sioux, Apache, Eskimo, Comanche, Choctaw, Cree, Ojibwa, Mohawk, Cheyenne, Navajo, Seminole, Hope, Shoshone, Mohican, Shawnee, Miโ€™kmaq, Paiute, Wampanoag, Ho-Chunk, Chumash, Haida.
Below is the tribal map of Pre-European North America.
The old map below gives a Native American perspective by placing the tribes in full flower ~ the โ€œGlory Days.โ€ It is pre-contact from across the eastern sea or, at least, before that contact seriously affected change. Stretching over 400 years, the time of contact was quite different from tribe to tribe. For instance, the โ€œGlory Daysโ€ of the Maya and Aztec came to an end very long before the interior tribes of other areas, with some still resisting almost until the 20th Century.
At one time, numbering in the millions, the native peoples spoke close to 4,000 languages.
The Americasโ€™ European conquest, which began in 1492, ended in a sharp drop in the Native American population through epidemics, hostilities, ethnic cleansing, and slavery.
When the United States was founded, established Native American tribes were viewed as semi-independent nations, as they commonly lived in communities separate from white immigrants.

TWO PIEGAN, Montana Blackfeet, posed in Glacier National Park in northwest Montana in about 1912. Roland W. Reed staged the nostalgic composition. Reedโ€™s strong sense of form, layout, was present in every photo. He and other pictorialists of the early 20th Century established photography as a fine art.

Roland Reed started his photographic career in 1893 with Daniel Dutro in Havre, Montana. The first book about Reed was published in 2012: "Alone with the Past: The Life and Photographic Art of Roland W. Reed.โ€ If using a PC, click image to enlarge. Although the source file was excellent, I spent considerable time in Photoshop to bring facial detail from the shadows and provide as much clarity as possible in a small file.
