The Trail of Tears: Choctaw Story
In the 1830s, the Choctaw people were forced to leave their homeland. Thousands walked over 500 miles, enduring hunger, disease, and bitter cold.
This forced march became known as the Trail of Tears. Families carried what little they could, and many didnโt survive the journey. Soldiers drove them westward, while graves lined the path.
But in the face of suffering, resilience endured. The Choctaw rebuilt their lives in Oklahoma, carrying their culture and traditions forward.
The Trail of Tears remains one of the darkest chapters in U.S. history, and a reminder of survival against cruelty.

NOVEMBER IS NATIONAL NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN HERITAGE MONTH.
It"s a chance to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions and histories and important contributions of Indigenous people in our country, along with acknowledging their hardship and struggles both throughout history and in the present day.
There are over 9 million Native American Indians and Native Alaskans living in the United States today. With over 500 federally recognized tribes, there are hundreds of different cultures that are as unique as the people they represent. From artwork and literature to cuisine and music, there is much to appreciate and learn.
For example in the State of Wisconsin, there are 11 federally
recognized tribes. During this month take the time to learn,
grow, and be aware of our nationโs first residents...
39 distinct First American Nations reside in Oklahoma. Our stories do not begin and end with European contact. The Apache, Caddo, Tonkawa, and Wichita inhabited these lands before the United States was established. Some tribes also have a historical relationship to this region, including the Comanche, Kiowa, Osage, and Quapaw. Many of us are not in Oklahoma by choice as our peoples were removed and relocated from their homelands across the continent, but after nearly 200 years, our histories and cultural lifeways are now interwoven into this landscape. Celebrate the vibrancy and resiliency of our diverse cultures this month and every month!

Feathers Mean A Lot To Native American Tribes-
A feather isnโt just something that falls out of a bird, it means much more. The feather symbolizes trust, honor, strength, wisdom, power, freedom and many more things. To be given one of these is to be hand picked out of the rest of the men in the tribe - itโs like getting a gift from a high official.
If any Indian is given Golden or Bald Eagle feathers it is one of the most rewarding items they can ever be handed. The Indians believe that eagles have a special connection with the heavens since they fly so close. Many Indians believe that if they are given this feather, it is a symbol from above. They believe that the eagle is the leader of all birds, because it flies as high as it does and sees better than all the birds.
Once an Indian receives a feather he must take care of it, and many will hang it up in their homes. It is disrespectful to hide it away in a drawer or a closet. An Indian will be given a feather to hold on to or to wear, and if they hold it they must put it out for everyone to see. This will be a constant reminder of how to behave. An eagle feather is a lot like the American flag, it must be handled with care and can never be dropped on the ground.
The only way an Indian can actually get one of these feathers is by doing a brave deed, like fighting off a bear or going up against the enemy. They were never allowed to wear the feather until they went in front of their tribal court and retold the story of their victory. It was at this time that they were allowed to put it in their headpiece. Only chieftains, warriors, and braves have ever been awarded this special gift. The next time you see eagle feathers in a headdress, think about how they were earned.

This refers to a significant moment in recent Native American and U.S. social history. In 2012, the small town of Leith, North Dakota, became the focus of national attention when a white supremacist attempted to turn it into a haven for neo-N**is. This sparked protests and resistance from local residents, Native American tribes, and anti-racist groups.
Lakota and Dakota grandmothers, representing Indigenous strength and resilience, stood up against the display of a N**i flag in their homeland. By capturing and burning the flag, they symbolically rejected the presence of hate and fascism on American soil. Their act was not just a protest, but also a declaration that Indigenous peopleโwhose ancestors had endured colonization, violence, and cultural erasureโwould not tolerate racism or oppression in any form.
This moment highlights how Native American communities continue to play a powerful role in the ongoing struggle for justice and equality. It also reframes the definition of patriotism: being a โreal Americanโ means standing against hatred and protecting the values of respect, dignity, and freedom for all.
