Sam Elliott was born on August 9, 1944 in Sacramento, California, and today he rides into his 81st birthday still commanding every frame. From humble beginnings as a guestโ€‘stoic in classics like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and Gunsmoke (1972), he drew first blood in leading roles with Frogs (1972) and broke through as the reflective lifeguard in Lifeguard (1976).

His unforgettable turn as the driftโ€‘wood cowboy in Mask (1985) cemented his status, then he brought Louis Lโ€™Amourโ€™s legends to life in The Quick and the Dead (1987) and earned a Golden Globe nod for Conagher (1991). Veteran praise followed for Buffalo Girls (1995), Gettysburg (1993) and the enigmatic Stranger in The Big Lebowski (1998).

In recent years, Elliottโ€™s deep drawl has echoed from the Academyโ€‘nominated warmth of A Star Is Born (2018) to the gritty frontier of 1883 (2021โ€“22), winning him a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance. Heโ€™s also thrilled fans in Justified, The Ranch and The Hero.

With a Screen Actors Guild Award, a National Board of Review prize and nominations across Oscars, Golden Globes and Emmys, Sam Elliott remains the living emblem of rugged elegance and timeless storytelling. Hereโ€™s to many more rides at sunset!

L.A. HUFFMAN loved nothing more than what he called the BIG OPEN, the unfenced range of Eastern Montana before barbed wire. Some of Huffmanโ€™s best shots were beautiful framings of men at work. In 1904 Huffman spent weeks traveling with the LU Bar, CK, Hat X, and XIT on a pool roundup. Soon the pool roundup would be a thing of the pastโ€ฆjust as the buffalo hunts that Huffman photographed two decades prior would no longer exist.

On August 1, 1904, Huffman captured some gents and a young lad from the Hat X around the rope corral for their remuda at Hungry Creek. One roped horse is probably being led out. At the left, a cowboy rides toward the hills toward five riders who can barely be seen. Please click image to enlarge/clarify. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.

โ€œWhen The Land Belonged To God.โ€ In 1880 at age 16, Charles Marion Russell arrived in Montana. Russell worked the open ranges before barbed wire enclosed lands. Charlie saw the last of the large buffalo herds, which were gone after 1883. If using a PC, click image to enlarge. It is worth the effort!

Steam and dust were rising from the herd as they crested a hill. Two wolves were prowling in the foreground. Additional buffalo were crossing the Missouri River in the background. Not a horse, cowboy, or Native was in view. Russell created his masterpiece in oil during 1913. I stare in awe. -Gary Coffrin
