After Col. George Custer’s 1874 Black Hills Expedition publicized the discovery of gold, immigrants flocked to land that had been granted to the Sioux by the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie. Within three years of Custer’s announcement, Deadwood’s population had boomed to 10,000 .

The signs grabbed my attention. T.B. Tarpy Blacksmithing & Wagon Repairing and NW Transportation Co. had signs for their Fairbanks scales. Fairbanks patented the first platform scales with mechanisms below ground level. Prior to this invention, loads had to be lifted to be accurately measured. The sign at far right for Snow Flake was presumably advertising the soap used by the laundry.

There was mud on the wagon wheels. Frank Jay Haynes made the capture in late 1877. His glass-plate negative required several minutes of preparation and then immediately after the shot had to be processed in a dark environment before the negative’s noxious collodion coating dried. The camera’s slow shutter allowed blur from motion of the men and animals, but focus was sharp and lens distortion was impressively low.

The buildings in view were likely less than four years old. At least two were built with hewn logs, but had front faces of dimensional lumber for a more ‘upscale’ appearance. A fire in 1879 would destroy 300 buildings in Deadwood, perhaps including these. This and 9,000 other negatives by F.J. Haynes reside at the venerable Montana Historical Society. Prior to arriving in Miles City, famed Old West photographer L.A. Huffman had worked for the Haynes Studio. -Gary Coffrin

He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his 1990 performance in "Dances with Wolves". Other films you may have seen him in include Thunderheart, Maverick, Die Hard with a Vengeance, the Green Mile, and Wind River. Graham Greene graduated from the Centre for Indigenous Theatre in 1974 & immediately began performing in professional theatre in Toronto and England, while also working as an audio technician for area rock bands. His TV debut was in 1979 and his screen debut in 1983. His acting career has now spanned over 4 decades & he remains as busy as ever. In addition to the Academy Award nomination for Dance with Wolves, he has been consistently recognized for his work, and also received nominations in 1994, 2000, 2004, 2006, and 2016. Graham Greene lives in Toronto, Canada, married since 1994, and has 1 adult daughter.

"The Three Spirits of the Storm"

In a time when the world was young and wild, storms were more than weather — they were alive, guardians of nature's balance. Among them roamed three sacred horses, each marked by powerful colors and ancient symbols. They were called The Spirits of the Storm.

The first was Korran, the Black Horse of Fury. His mane cracked like lightning, his hooves summoned thunder. Korran carried the spirit of raw power, reminding the world that destruction, though feared, clears the way for new beginnings.

The second was Veya, the White Horse of Clarity. She moved like the winds after the rain, graceful and pure. Veya whispered to the rivers and forests, teaching that peace follows every tempest, and stillness is just as mighty as rage.

The third was Rhaelo, the Painted Horse of Balance. Marked with swirling patterns of red and black, Rhaelo held the sacred duty of weaving Korran and Veya’s opposing forces together. He was neither chaos nor calm, but the bridge between — the symbol that harmony comes only when opposites respect each other.

When storms raged across mountains and darkened the skies, the people would pray to the Three Spirits. It is said that if they rode in unity, the storm would pass gently, feeding the earth without tearing it apart.

One night, a young shaman asked the spirits in his dream,
"Which of you is the greatest?"

The horses answered together in a voice of wind and rain:
"None alone. Fury teaches respect. Peace offers healing. Balance carries both. Together, we are whole."

To this day, when thunder rolls and lightning dances above, the wise know the Three Spirits are riding once more —
"Not to bring fear, but to remind the world that strength, peace, and balance must always run together."
