In 4th grade at Crow Agency School the late Mick Fedullo came into our class and introduced us rez kids to poetry. He taught us to express ourselves and even took it a step further and published our poems in a book. Then he allowed some of us to recite our poems in front of crowds at conferences. Personally I can look back and see how it boosted my confidence in life. I could say as a kid "my poem is published in a book" and that I had the experience of public speaking. He made us feel like we were "somebody". Later on in life I would use these tools of writing and public speaking to become a national award winning artist. Today I think my friend Mick Fedullo would be happy and proud that I have been nominated to be Montana's Poet Laureate!! This ones for you. A'ho!

Gil Birmingham, of Comanche ancestry, was born in San Antonio, Texas. Growing up in a military family, he moved frequently and developed a love for music, mastering the guitar in his youth.

Though he earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California and worked as a petrochemical engineer, fate had other plans — a talent scout discovered him while bodybuilding in the early 1980s, leading to his first screen appearance in Diana Ross’s 1982 music video “Muscles.”

Birmingham soon dedicated himself fully to acting, studying under renowned coaches Larry Moss and Charles Conrad. He made his TV debut in 1986 with the series Riptide and later appeared in Body & Soul (2002) and Steven Spielberg’s epic miniseries Into the West (2005). Audiences today know him best for roles like Billy Black in The Twilight Saga and the Texas Ranger in Hell or High Water, where he starred alongside Jeff Bridges.

With decades of diverse performances, Gil Birmingham continues to captivate audiences and honor his Native American heritage through every role he takes on.

Chief Dan George (born Geswanouth Slahoot, July 24, 1899 – Tsleil-Waututh Nation, Canada) was a remarkable actor, poet, writer, and spiritual leader of Indigenous heritage.
He rose to fame with his unforgettable role as Old Lodge Skins in Little Big Man (1970), earning him an Oscar nomination – the first ever for an Indigenous Canadian actor.
Beyond the screen, he was a powerful voice for Indigenous rights, tirelessly advocating for cultural preservation, environmental protection, and social justice.
Through his poetry, books, speeches, and community work, he inspired pride, unity, and cultural awareness, empowering future generations of Indigenous youth.

Northern Cheyenne Chief AMERICAN HORSE was describing the 1876 Battle of the Little Big Horn. The year was 1901, the 25th anniversary of Custer's defeat. (The chief should not be confused with the Oglala Sioux chief known by the same name.)

Historian O.D. Wheeler, right, hired Miles City photographer L.A. Huffman. Wheeler had earlier worked as a topographer in the 1870s, surveying unmapped areas of the Old West. He became best known for traveling the Lewis and Clark Trail in 1904, and publishing his comparisons to the original trip of 100 years earlier. L.A. Huffman also photographed portions of that journey.

OCTOBER SUNRISE on Old Indian Creek Trail, 1917, by L.A. Huffman. This magnificent vista was captured on the Spear Brothers Cattle Ranch. The Spear O outfit leased one million acres on the Crow Reservation and ran 50,000 head of cattle. It had 22 "main" ranches in Montana and Wyoming, and 110 cow camps when transit by horse was the only option. Click photo to clarify/enlarge.

This is a photo made of a Huffman print still under glass in its original frame. The original print measured 15 inches wide and was hand-tinted in Huffman’s Miles City studio. Three decades earlier, Huffman and his partner had started the first cattle ranch in the Rosebud Creek area. Huffman knew cattle, horses, and the terrain of Eastern Montana.
