Great news for Kansas families and students! S Sub for HB 2402 a bill I cosponsored has been signed into law by Gov Kelly, expanding access to school meals across our state.

This commonsense step helps more schools offer free breakfast and lunch through the Community Eligibility Provision, ensuring kids have the nutrition they need to learn and succeed, while maintaining local flexibility for districts.

When we support our students, we strengthen Kansas.

Kansas Appleseed Applauds Governor Kelly Signing S Sub HB 2402 into Law - Kansas Appleseed “A school meal is an essential school supply,” said Haley Kottler, Senior Campaign Director for Kansas Appleseed. “This new law is a practical step in the right direction that helps more Kansas kids access the food they need to learn, grow, and succeed."

Op-Ed: Prescription drug monopoly exploits patients, employers and taxpayers; SB360 can fix it in Kansas - Kansas Informer 03/30/2026

I voted yes on SB 20 (originally SB 360) Big Pharma middlemen Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) have operated in the shadows for far too long, driving up prescription costs while squeezing our local pharmacies and limiting patient access.

PBM reform is about transparency, accountability, and putting patients first.

For years, PBMs have controlled drug pricing behind closed doors—deciding what medications are covered, how much pharmacies are paid, and what patients ultimately pay at the counter. Meanwhile, independent pharmacies—especially in rural and underserved areas—are being pushed to the brink, with many forced to close their doors.

Recently, we’ve heard a lot of misleading claims about a “$10.50 dispensing fee.” Let’s be clear: this is not a giveaway or a handout. It is a fair and transparent reimbursement to ensure pharmacies can actually afford to dispense medications safely and sustainably.

PBMs want you to believe this reform will raise costs—but what they don’t tell you is they are already inflating prices through hidden fees, spread pricing, and lack of oversight. The current system benefits them, not patients.

Reforming PBMs means:
✔️ Lowering out-of-pocket costs for families
✔️ Protecting access to local, community pharmacies
✔️ Bringing transparency to a broken system
✔️ Ensuring fair reimbursement for pharmacists providing essential healthcare

This is about standing up to corporate middlemen and making sure Kansans—not PBMs—come first.

We will continue to fight for a system that is fair, transparent, and puts patients over profit!

Thank you to my So Every Body Can Move folks who came out to testify at an Informational Meeting we had in Social Services Budget Committee on HB 2566.

Everyone deserves the chance to move freely, live fully, and pursue their dreams, no matter their circumstances.

Access to prosthetics isn’t just about mobility. It’s about dignity, independence, and opportunity. For too many people, cost, insurance barriers, or outdated policies stand in the way of something as basic as walking, bathing, working, or playing with their kids.

We can do better.

It’s time to support policies and solutions that make prosthetic care more accessible, more affordable, and more responsive to the real needs of patients—not red tape.

Because when we remove barriers, we don’t just help people move, we help them thrive.

Let’s stand for freedom of movement for everyone.

I’m excited to announce that I will be running for reelection to continue serving our community in the Kansas House of Representatives District #39.

It has been an honor to represent the people of our district and to work on the issues that matter most to our families — strong schools, safe communities, responsible budgeting, and protecting Kansas values. Over the past term, I’ve worked hard to listen to constituents, bring your voices to Topeka, and stand up for policies that strengthen our community and our state.

There is still important work ahead, and I remain committed to advocating for the people I represent and ensuring our district continues to have a strong voice at the Capitol.

Thank you for your continued support, encouragement, and trust. I look forward to the opportunity to keep serving you.

The Shawnee St. Patrick’s Day Parade is always a fun family tradition! ☘️

This year, most of us braved the cold to enjoy the festivities, and it was wonderful to see so many people out celebrating together. A big thank you to our police officers, firefighters, and all the organizers, volunteers, and participants who helped make the parade possible. We appreciate everyone who worked hard behind the scenes and kept the event safe for our community.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! 🍀

Did you know that individuals with disabilities can save money without risking important benefits? ABLE accounts (Achieving a Better Life Experience accounts) allow people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to save for expenses like housing, education, transportation, health care, and more—while still maintaining eligibility for programs such as Medicaid and SSI.

These accounts empower individuals with IDD to build financial independence and plan for the future with greater security. Family and friends can also contribute, making it a powerful tool to support long-term stability and opportunity.

ABLE accounts are helping people with disabilities live, work, and thrive in their communities. 💙 Thank you to Lola and Whit for your testimony!

HB 2501: TAP (The Armory Project) Supporting Responsible Gun Ownership and Saving Lives. I would like to thank Johnson County Mental Health Center for their help and former Rep John Resman, who passed away earlier this week, including the overwhelming bipartisan support this bill received.

HB 2501 because I believe we can protect Second Amendment rights while also encouraging responsible, voluntary steps that save lives.

HB 2501 allows a firearm owner to voluntarily enter into a private firearm hold agreement with a federally licensed fi****ms dealer. Under these agreements, the dealer temporarily stores a lawfully owned firearm at the owner’s request and returns it at the end of the agreed period. The bill provides civil liability protection for the dealer when the firearm is returned to its rightful owner, so long as the dealer has not engaged in unlawful conduct.
The issue we addressed was practical and urgent. We heard testimony from fi****ms dealers, veterans advocates, and mental health professionals who explained that temporary, voluntary storage can reduce su***de risk during times of personal crisis. According to testimony presented to the committee, most firearm deaths nationally are su***des, and among veterans more than seventy percent involve a firearm. For someone facing a moment of crisis, temporarily storing a firearm outside the home can significantly lower risk.

However, many federal fi****ms licensees have been reluctant to offer this service because they fear being sued after returning a firearm to its lawful owner. That uncertainty has discouraged participation in programs like Hold My Guns and other local partnerships with mental health professionals and veterans organizations.

I supported this bill and provided testimony because it removes that legal barrier while preserving constitutional rights. The immunity is narrow and specific. It protects a dealer only for returning a firearm according to the agreement and does not shield unlawful conduct. It does not create new mandates, new reporting requirements, or new restrictions on lawful gun owners. It simply provides clarity and certainty so small businesses can help without fear of frivolous litigation.

The bill also reinforces property rights. A lawfully owned firearm remains the property of its owner. Entering into a temporary storage agreement cannot be used to imply negligence, incapacity, or future liability. Nor can it diminish the owner’s right to reclaim their property once the agreement ends.

We also ensured that dealers maintain discretion. No dealer is required to enter into a hold agreement, and local governments are prevented from adding conflicting regulations that would create confusion across the state. Records related to the agreement must be destroyed within a defined time frame, protecting privacy.
I believe strongly in defending the Second Amendment. I also believe in personal responsibility and practical solutions. HB 2501 reflects both principles. It supports veterans, strengthens su***de prevention efforts, protects small businesses, and safeguards property rights without expanding government control.

SB 281 Over the last several years, I have heard consistently from parents, teachers, and even students about the growing impact of smartphones in the classroom. Teachers describe constant distraction and declining attention spans. Parents speak about anxiety, social pressure, and the mental health toll associated with social media. What was once considered a convenience has increasingly become a barrier to focused learning.

This past week, the House debated
SB 281 and passed it with language that addressed student cell phone use during the school day, including private schools. When the bill reached the Senate, it was ultimately killed. I believe that outcome was a missed opportunity to take a meaningful step in supporting students.

In my view, this issue is fundamentally about student well being and academic success. When phones dominate the school day, they compete directly with instruction, discipline, and peer interaction. Educators across Kansas have asked for clearer guardrails so they can teach without constantly policing devices.

Parents have asked for help in reinforcing healthy boundaries.
I supported including all schools because the underlying challenge is not confined to one type of institution. Excessive phone use affects attention, mental health, and social development regardless of where a child attends school. Addressing that reality in a consistent way would have provided clarity and support to families and educators alike.

This was not about overcomplicating policy or creating unnecessary bureaucracy. It was about reinforcing the basic purpose of a school day: learning, engagement, and personal growth. Clear expectations help students focus. They also relieve pressure on teachers who are too often placed in the middle of ongoing device disputes.

I respect that there were different opinions on how best to approach the issue. While the bill did not ultimately advance, it sounds like legislators in the Senate are continuing to work toward a solution that can gain broader agreement. I remain encouraged that this conversation is not over and will continue working alongside colleagues to find practical steps that support students and strengthen learning environments across Kansas.
