Does anyone at your company actually know the passwords to your routers and your server?
Full story: https://www.tech360solutions.com/articles/two-weeks-without-a-fix
A local company found out theirs the hard way. The connection between their two offices went down, and it stayed down for about two weeks. Not because the problem was hard (the eventual fix took minutes), but because their IT person was a relative who'd moved out of state for college, and every password went with him. Staff sat asking when things would work again. Nobody could even log in to look.
Two things to check today: who you'd call if your network broke, and whether your passwords are written down somewhere the business controls. Either answer being "I don't know" is the same spot they were in.
Here's how good these scams have gotten. A bookkeeper at a local company had a real QuickBooks problem and opened a real support ticket. Then her phone rang: tech support, about a QuickBooks issue. The timing was pure coincidence (scammers cold-call about QuickBooks constantly), but think about what that coincidence did. She had a problem, she'd asked for help, and help called.
The fake agent invented an overdue invoice, took a card payment through software he had her install, and left that software running on her machine. It was named QuickBooks Support Manager. Nothing on screen looked wrong.
The monitoring already on her computer flagged it the same day. Final damage: one cancelled card, one disputed charge, nothing else touched.
The rule that beats this scam: an incoming call is never proof of who's calling, no matter how much they seem to know. Hang up, call back through the number on the vendor's real website. Real support will never be offended. Share that with whoever pays the bills at your office.
Quick question for KC business owners: do you know who actually renews your company's domain name each year?
A client of ours didn't. Turned out it was one man at a tiny reseller, renewing it by hand every year. When he had a medical emergency, the domain expired with the bill fully paid. Website gone, email dead, owner running the business from personal Gmail. One day of total shutdown, and it could have been far worse.
Check three things today: where your domain is registered, whether you have the login, and whether auto-renew is on. Takes twenty minutes. Beats finding out the way they did.
