The State Department of Agriculture today recommends:
No selling of local eggs for the next couple of weeks.
Clallam County has had 2 backyard flocks infected with the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1. There is no immediate public health concern due to the avian influenza virus detected.
Eating properly cooked eggs and chicken doesn't cause a health risk but, there is a concern about the spread of the virus to both wild and domestic birds by transferring eggs or chickens off the farm.
Both backyard flocks were confirmed yesterday. Both flock owners lost a significant amount of birds suddenly. The premises of both places were quarantined and the rest of their birds were euthanized. Both flocks reported direct contact with wild waterfowl.
Recommendations are to not sell eggs or birds, not share or lend tools and equipment, keep different domestic species separate, and limit access to their farms.
Report unusual, multiple deaths or illness among domestic birds to the WSDA Avian Health Program at 1-800-606-3056.
