Village Heartbeat

January 14, 1994. Thirty years ago. That was the day I started on my journey as a teacher of the drum.

Baba Olatunji was my first and my main teacher. Fred Simpson, Sanga of the Valley, Ma Boukaka, Moshe Milon and others had helped me along the way.

It started when some friends asked me to share what I had been learning on the drum. And I did. That one-time gathering turned into weekly classes. I was barely ahead of my students learning with them and through them.

I learned how to break everything down, slow things down so there was less pressure to learn.

I shared what I knew, and always gave props and credit to my teachers. I took a lot of classes and taught a lot of classes.

Drumming has been a calling. It’s been a passion and a gift. I have loved sharing it with others.

I can say so much about the joy of teaching, the miracle of music making, the expression of performance, and creating community. I continue to teach, and continue to learn.

I have had thirty years of teaching/sharing/ connecting with you as of JANUARY 14, 1994.
