China's BYD has filed a patent for a new AI camera system designed to check the space under a parked car before it drives off.

The system works by taking a picture of the area beneath the car when it is parked and switched off. Before the car moves again, a new picture is compared to that first one to spot any changes, helping catch a small pet or person who may be resting underneath.

The patent was published by China's National Intellectual Property Administration this month. BYD has also filed a similar patent for a sensor system that checks for anyone left inside the car.

This technology has not yet been added to production cars.
