Logging isnāt just about harvesting timber, itās about managing a renewable resource. Every harvest is carefully planned, and for every tree we cut, 3-4 new trees are planted in its place.
The forests we work in today help build homes, products, and communities. The forests we plant help ensure the next generation can do the same.
Gravity always wins... unless youāre backed up by a 1-inch steel winch line. š³
Tethered logging (or winch-assisted logging) allows these massive 40-ton machines to harvest timber on steep slopes that used to be completely unreachable. Every single second on this hill is a calculation of weight, tension, and traction.
One bad slip, and itās a long way down. Would you sit in the operatorās seat? š

- A new kind of forestry project is underway at Galbraith Tree Farm.
Galbraith Tree Farm, Janicki Logging Co., and The Carbon Lockdown Project have launched the Galbraith Carbon Vault Trial ā Washingtonās first Wood Vault carbon removal pilot.
The project will test whether non-sawlog material from managed forest operations can be stored underground in a way that supports durable carbon removal, while keeping the site compatible with long-term working forest management.
If you ride, hike, or run at Galbraith, you may notice construction signs, work trucks, and equipment near Road 2000. Please follow posted signage and avoid active work areas.
Weāll be documenting the process as the project moves from staging to excavation, burial, restoration, and monitoring.

Recently, a pair of 7th grade students from Anacortes Middle School reached out to us with some great questions about forestry, carbon, and wildlife habitat.
They asked, in plain terms, how cutting trees can ever be part of improving a forest ā and that is exactly the kind of question worth asking.
Our response: not all forests are in healthy condition, and not all tree cutting is the same. In places like Trillium Community Forest, restoration thinning has been used to help an overcrowded second-growth tree farm recover more understory, more biodiversity, and a healthier long-term forest structure. Our carbon forestry page also explains how we think about forest growth, carbon capture, and long-term management.

šØ MOUNTAIN CLOSED DEC 11ā14 šØ
Galbraith Tree Farm will be temporarily closed to the public from Thursday, December 11 through Sunday, December 14 for wildlife management activities.
To help protect new growth and support healthy forest regeneration, a small team of professional foresters will conduct a highly controlled bow hunt to reduce deer overpopulation in the area. This is not recreational hunting ā it's part of our long-term forest stewardship strategy.
š Please respect all closure signs for your safety and the safety of our team.

Logging is coming to the top of Galbraith. Weāve heard the rumors and seen the concernāand we want to help set the record straight.
We didnāt decide to cut this tract. But we did bid for itābecause no one knows these trails like we do. Hereās what to expect, and why this harvest is about protecting the future of Galbraith -
Logging DNR Land at Galbraith: Forest Health, Schools, & Trails ā Janicki Logging Co. A state-managed tract at the top of Galbraith is being logged due to tree mortality, state trust obligations, and long-term forest recovery goals. Hereās what to know.

š² Not all logging is created equal.
A recent Salish Current feature sparked debate about new federal timber policyāso we weighed in with our own perspective from the field.
This new blog post explores why responsible timber harvesting, when done right, is one of the most effective tools we have for restoring overcrowded, fire-prone forests. Featuring real-world restoration work from Finney Creek and Trillium, plus new insights from USDA forest health directives.
