Eradicating knotwood and common reed makes a multibillion dollar industry. Millridge North in Secaucus is an active test area for eradication poisons.

The Millridge area of the Meadowlands has been subjected to chemical defoliants in recent years. Now in 2016 a new test killed both the grasses and the local fauna in the treatment area. That is the strip forest bordering the women's softball field at Anthony Fusco Field. Earlier chemical tests at Millridge killed the reeds. Impacts on plants, animals, people are unknown.
