PTSD has taken on a variety of names throughout history, including “shell shock” and “battle fatigue,” leading many to believe that only those who have experienced combat can develop PTSD. While PTSD is prevalent in the military community, it is not limited to this population. According to the National Center for PTSD, an estimated 12 million U.S. adults experience symptoms of PTSD, with a variety of risk factors contributing to the likelihood of developing the disorder.
At Zur Institute, we offer a variety of courses on PTSD, as well as EMDR, which has shown very positive results in the treatment of PTSD. This month, let’s commit to expanding our knowledge and gaining more tools to help our clients living with PTSD with trauma-informed care.

May marks the celebration of Mental Health Awareness Month. Established by Mental Health America, they have declared the theme of 2026 to be “More Good Days, Together”. Let us consider, what does a good mental health day look like for you? What about for your friends or family? This month, let’s reach out to those in our community to discover how we can provide support, so that everyone may have more good days.

A physician teaching medical students brings them to observe a cadaver. She places her middle finger in the cadaver’s mouth, then puts a finger in her own mouth, urging the students to do the same to overcome their disgust and discomfort with the human body. Reluctantly, they follow her instructions.
Afterward, she reveals that while her middle finger went into the cadaver’s mouth, she put her index finger into her own. They failed to notice the distinction. Her point—clinical competence requires close attention to every detail.
How often do we miss key opportunities for intervention or to shift a person’s perspective when assumptions replace keen observation?
