SAND is a journey, an exploration on the nature of awareness.

At Science and Nonduality, preeminent scientists, philosophers, mystics and artists gather to explore and advance the new paradigm emerging in spirituality that is both grounded in cutting-edge science and consistent with the ancient wisdom of nonduality--the deep understanding of the interconnectedness of life.

Nkem Ndefo speaks about one of the hidden stories of our time.

Neoliberal culture teaches us to see ourselves primarily as individuals. If something is wrong, we are told it is our responsibility to fix it. If the world is burning, we should recycle more, consume less, try harder.

While every action matters, Nkem reminds us that not all impacts exist on the same scale.

The burden of responsibility is often placed on ordinary people while the largest systems of extraction and wealth accumulation continue largely unchecked.

This imbalance can leave us carrying a disproportionate sense of guilt, exhaustion, and personal failure.

Robert Tenzin Thurman was a cherished teacher and friend of the SAND community, bringing together profound wisdom, infectious humor, and an unwavering faith in humanity’s capacity to awaken. In times of uncertainty, he reminded us that wisdom is not an escape from the world, but a way of meeting it with courage, compassion, and delight.
In one of his recent reflections, he wrote: “Reality is not against us. Life is not a mistake. At its deepest level, existence is meaningful, powerful… and yes, even blissful.” These words capture so much of what he offered: a grounded and intelligent hope rooted in the deepest teachings of the Buddha and in his own boundless love for life.
We honor Robert with immense gratitude for the insight, laughter, and encouragement he shared so generously. May his teachings continue to guide us toward a more compassionate and awakened world.

Mongolian Dharma Poetry
Podcast with Simon Wickhamsmith
Simon Wickhamsmith is a Buddhist monk turned scholar, computer musician, and one of the only translators of Mongolian literature into English. He teaches in the Writing Program at Rutgers University and has been traveling back and forth to Mongolia since 2006. In this conversation he traces his spiritual path from Catholicism through Tibetan Buddhism and back to medieval Christian mysticism, introduces the Mongolian poet Mend-Ooyo, and takes us deep into the life and poetry of the 19th century Buddhist polymath Danzanravjaa — a figure Simon considers his primary teacher — including a live reading of the poem Twos, a stunning meditation on nonduality from the Mongolian steppe.

During our recent Little Singer gathering, Jeneda Benally shared a powerful reminder:

Trauma is something we have experienced.
It is not who we are.

A Diné artist, musician, and lifelong advocate for Indigenous rights, Jeneda spoke about how their communities are often viewed only through the lens of trauma, loss, and hardship. While these histories are real and must be acknowledged, they cannot become the total story.

Trauma is a lens.
It shapes how we see.
It leaves marks that move across generations.

But it is not our identity.

“Healing begins when we name the injustice, not silence it.”
— Dr. Samah Jabr

What happens when mental health practice refuses to separate personal suffering from political reality?

Join Palestinian psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and author Dr. Samah Jabr for Part 2 of her course on Decolonial Mental Health Practice.

Drawing on decades of clinical work in Palestine, Dr. Jabr explores how trauma, humiliation, displacement, gendered oppression, and structural violence shape the psyche and how healing requires us to examine not only the wound, but the conditions that created it.

This course invites mental health practitioners, humanitarian workers, educators, and advocates into a deeper conversation about ethics, liberation, dignity, and care.

During our recent gathering for the Little Singer film premiere , Clayson Benally spoke about a contradiction unfolding across Indigenous lands today.

A Diné musician, traditional healer, activist, and cultural ambassador from Black Mesa, Clayson reflected on the push to build massive AI infrastructure and data centers in regions where many Indigenous communities still struggle for basic necessities.

In some places, families do not have reliable access to potable water.

Yet enormous amounts of water are being demanded to cool the technologies powering the next phase of the digital economy.

Whose needs are being prioritized with this so called "progress"?
