Question Friday!
Q: Can we use comp time with our employees?
A: It depends. For non-exempt employees of a private employer, no. The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) doesn’t permit private employers to offer compensatory time (“comp time”) in lieu of overtime pay. You could offer time off to your exempt employees as a reward for working more than their typical work week, which is considered a form of “flex time,” but there are downsides to doing this.

A couple of ways to help your brain to stay healthy is to get plenty of sleep, exercise regularly, and stay mentally active.
Q: We know we need to plan for our leaders to leave the organization. How do we start succession planning?
A: Succession planning prepares your current employees to move into leadership and other critical roles, easing their transition and inspiring confidence in their ability to succeed. Here are a few steps you could take to get started with your succession plan for key positions you’ve identified:
1) Consider the future needs of the organization by identifying your short- and long-term goals, as well as what roles you will need to achieve those goals.
2) Once you identify the positions that are critical to these future needs, analyze the expertise, skills, and institutional knowledge these roles must have to be successful.
3) Create career roadmaps to facilitate developing employees into these positions. These roadmaps would include any formal or informal training needed, including any time that should be spent with someone currently in the role. This is an opportunity to share the institutional knowledge that isn’t always passed along when a role changes hands.
Reading books regularly helps to increase your vocabulary and comprehension, and it aids in sleep readiness.
Q: If an employee changes their name, do we need to complete a new Form I-9?
A: Expert for certain government contractors or some situations involving the use of fraudulent documents, employers do not need to update or complete a new Form I-9 when an employee changes their legal name or address. That said, the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) recommends keeping correct information on Forms I-9 and taking steps to ensure a name change is legitimate.
