Floating home inspection time! For my clients, this is always a great time to learn about your future home, meet the neighbors that pop in, and get a good “feel” for the house and spaces. In addition to the normal above water inspection you would have with any home, a floating home requires a below water inspection to look at the floatation, attachments, and utility connections.

I also always ask the divers to swim around the home a little further out and look for any hazards. It could be a longer log under the house that you can’t see from above or it could be a sunken sailboat. There are other interesting possibilities as well. When the submerged parcels below our floating homes were sold over a hundred years ago, the lake bed was surveyed and marked with vertical rail road ties (!!!!). Some are still standing (like skewers). It’s an extra safety precaution so that when my sweet client jumps in the water she won’t get hurt by something she can’t see or didn’t expect.

This is just one thing that I do differently than a broker who doesn’t specialize on the water (or live here). There are thousands and thousands of reasons to work with someone who lives and breathes the waterfront and floating lifestyle. This is just one.

Extra tidbit: I have also sold this particular home before (multiple times) and even know the history of it going back to before it was towed from Portage Bay. It used to actually be tied (yes tied) to the very dock I currently live on before it was towed to Eastlake and connected to utilities and adopted into one of the strongest and longest running co-ops on the lake. I remember when they pulled all the homes out in front of it to trade it out for a dilapidated one that was too far gone. I remember when the legendary Sid McFarland worked on it tirelessly to get it ready for the market. I remember meeting the first sweetheart Eastlake owner of it. This house has history and good energy. I’m happy to be able to be a part of its next chapter through my incredible buyer.

Let me know if you want to learn more about living in the lake. I am happy to show you any homes both on and off the market because I live here and I know who might/will sell.

You can see what’s listed here on my company website SeattleAfloat.com: Life Afloat In Seattle floating home site. It has all listings by all brokers and a few more stories. I recently scrapped all my old blog posts since 2006 and started fresh. www.seattleafloat.com
