If you're in Italy this summer, consider a trip to Matera in the province of Basilicata in the arch of the boot, especially for the Festa della Bruna on July 2nd that involves the procession of the saint on an elaborately decorated wagon. At a specified point in the procession, the tradition is for the crowd to tear off pieces of the cardboard decorations until it is completely destroyed. But, be careful! Things can get rough for those trying to grab pieces of the decorations. Also in August there is a wonderful festival at the beautiful beach of Metaponto.
