“The biggest indicator that we needed to shift is the conviction we felt when we got negative feedback”(Jordan Bain). “The amount of money a company raises doesn’t directly correlate to how well the business will do. Focus on your product and customer” said Ken Aragon, the moderator of today’s Fundamentals for Startups. “Most people fall in love with the idea instead of the problem,” Amit Chopra said in today’s Fundamentals for Startups lecture. Chopra discussed the mindsets used by major tech companies, including Google and Amazon, that start-ups should adopt. He emphasized that a start-up should utilize data on the entire customer base to improve products and highlighted the importance of building trust with the consumer.

Fundamentals for Startups is back. We were so happy to host Alan Hambelton for Pre-Seed Financing Fundamentals: Setting Your Startup Up for Success. Hambelton explored different financing options depending on company structure, ownership, and company stage. He also advised that start-ups begin as soon as possible and to connect with everyone because it might lead to an investor.

“When something is working, lean in and push the chips in,” said Rich Barton at last night’s . With Olly Downs moderating, and a full house, the event was inspiring for startups as well as people from all walks of life.
Barton told stories about his background, his successes and failures, and experiences while leading Expedia, Glassdoor, and Zillow. He also talked about what makes a good board member and shared this insight about leadership: "Disappearing is a great leadership development tool--leaders emerge when you're not accessible." A few lucky audience members were able to ask questions, and we all learned about a super effective tip for productive meetings (spoiler alert: it's not a PowerPoint deck).
