Our community hosted a great React.js Hack Night Meetup a couple of days ago at our Capitol Hill location. We had over 20 attendees of all skill levels collaborating to learn and build React.js projects together!

This is just one of many events where our guests get immersed in Seattle's tech community. We hope to see you soon at one of our next Meetups!

React.js is a JavaScript library for building user interfaces and was created by Facebook. It powers many of today's modern web and mobile applications.

On July 22th and Aug 5th we had Demo Nights at the beautiful and sunny Lake Union Hacker House, and we had a few interesting projects to show off.

Elie showed off a useful tool he built in a single day with node.js, which connected a Slack channel to Facebook's messaging service in order to provide automated responses to a group's messages.

John showed us a procedurally-generated virtual world akin to Minecraft and described the process of creating it.

Danny showed us a video game shooter based on the design concept of having power-ups that balance advantage with penalty.

Cody talked about Nuclear Physics (it isn’t about bombs!)
Multi-dimensional integrals are tough, so we use monte carlo.
“I’m interested in using the results of the calculation to better understand neutron stars”, he said.

Josh presented a personal productivity app that integrates with a user’s calendar to understand available time to work on tasks and then it creates a prioritized agenda for the day.
Currently working with a Code Fellows development team to build a prototype also thinking of starting a coaching service
He'd love to try out the coaching service for free with people in the house. Let him know if you are interested in improving your productivity. You can reach him via email ([email protected]). Also want to try the algorithm when it's ready.

Jeff recommend using a kit when starting out with emacs - Jeff uses spacemacs
Emacs is super extensible with Lisp, you can customize it as much as you want
You can test your code in a tight feedback loop with some of the available tools
You can use vim commands if you’d like.
Jeff can help you get started with emacs and spacemacs! Just reach out :)

And of course, we finish off both evenings with some great snacks, great conversation, and great people.

Thanks to everyone who attended and/or presented!

See you in the next one!

StoryBit: 70 Bite-Size Business Stories in a Deck 07/31/2018

Hi Grokhome friends!

We have an exciting Kickstarter project launched today by one of our former Grokhome guests. The project is called StoryBit, and introduces a collection of business stories and consumer behavior researches put together on illustrated postcards. It is aimed to help you start influencing people and leading change in the workplace using storytelling. If you are interested, it would be awesome if you can back StoryBit today with any amount, as projects with early supporters get boosted on the Kickstarter system. Link to project is here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/534017249/storybit-70-bite-size-business-stories-in-a-deck

In our last Demo Night we had, as usual, snaks an 🍰 for our July's babies, but more important than that, we had, also, a visit from two former Grokhome residents! Darlene led a round-table discussion on the role of failure in game design, and David showed us a command-line tool written in Rust for managing environment variables. "Who here has been frustrated with managing environment variables?" Answer: just about everyone. Captain David (not to be confused with former David) had interviewing on the mind, having just been accepted into Microsoft! Congratulations, David! He showed us the interview problem that got him into the program, outlining the process to finding a solution. How do you find the most common repetition of a phrase in a set of text? Hmmmm....See you next time 🙂.
BTW, our next Demo Night will take place this Sunday at the Lake Union Hacker House. Come ready to meet super interesting people, and have an amazing night with all the incredible guests we are hosting this Summer😀😉!

The last Sunday, Jun 27th we were treated to an exceptionally polished presentation by Nathan on his work with programming GPUs. We got thick into the code with this one and learned the difference between CPUs and GPUs and how parallel processing can enable people to solve problems involving massive numbers of data. Then we got to see the latest improvements in William's VR game, which took a big step forward with the inclusion of motion to the obstacles you have to dodge as a player. And if that wasn't enough, Yoly made ribs! Ribs and salad and rice and beans and cake, in honor of all our June babies. What a great night. We are looking forward to having a similar experience at our next Event. Thank you all for coming and supporting our presenters.
