"In business school, I didn't really know what I wanted to do. I felt like the black sheep because I didn't want to do finance or consulting.

When I got the chance to do the generalist consulting program at IBM, it was the spark I needed to find where I fit.

Working in UX and learning how to use design thinking to solve problems was an amazing foundation, but I still felt a desire to get closer to what I was building. Truthfully, I felt a little insecure just being a designer.

So, I did a coding bootcamp and got a job in software engineering for 2 years. I did well but found that software engineering wasn't really the way my brain works. It was more systematic and mechanical, but I like leading teams, talking to customers, and solving problems. Software engineering felt isolating to me.

With my background, Product Management seemed like a great fit. Since transitioning, I've done three product management roles, took Reforge's growth course, and just started a new gig at FullStory.

I believe not specializing in one role has allowed to me stand out. Pivoting careers helped me build technical experience, UX/UI experience, and growth experience, all of which make me a better product manager.

My biggest learning in my career is to understand who you are and what environments you like. What stage of company do you want to work for next? What role and impact do you want to have? What are you looking for in a hiring manager? If you don't know what you want, it's like you are blindly throwing darts. Be intentional and unafraid of change."

One result of a world that celebrates work and activity over renewal, is that people are pushed to find a job before they know the career path they want to pursue.

But 70% of people are unhappy with their career choices. We can do better.

Yes, life demands the doer, the productive, the ambitious. But it also requires balance in self-reflection, renewal, and exploration.

Possible is built around the idea that it is worth taking time to explore, consider multiple options, and test assumptions when choosing your next career step.

"After college, I was planning on going to dental school. But then I learned about product design from an entrepreneurship club.

I had actually been designing for fun since I was 12 years old. I never knew that I could do that as a career. It wasn’t even in my purview.

When I was in high school, I was really into K-Pop. I started designing t-shirts and putting them on Tumblr and at one point, we had over 10K followers. In college, I was really into eSports and I fell into helping teams design websites and pitch decks.

Back then, my parents didn’t love that I spent so much time in K-Pop and video games, but I just did it because I enjoyed it. I believe those passion projects helped me land my first design internship.

I got a full-time offer from Intuit after my internship and rescinded all my dental applications. I loved learning something new every day and decided I didn't want to go back to school for 4 more years.

My message is to find what energizes you and to do small side-hustles that you enjoy. They can turn into opportunities, because the best portfolios in design show someone's personality and how they solved a problem they cared about."

- Deanna Nguyen, Design Manager at Lively, Inc.

Career paths aren't linear, nor should they be. We should always be exploring our options and assessing our current direction.

Sometimes, it's ok to take one step back to go two steps forward.

Sheryl Sandberg managed tens of thousands at the Treasury. She left to manage a team of four at Google.

“There are so many times I’ve seen people not make that jump because they’re afraid they’ll 'move backward.' ...If you can financially afford it, and you’re gonna work the next, I don’t know, 30 years, who cares about ‘going down?" - Sheryl Sandberg

Today, it is simply too difficult to explore careers in a structured, efficient, and enjoyable way. That’s why we built Possible, to help people explore multiple career paths.
