Solidarity always prevails!

Recently at IAM Local 325, Union Pacific Railroad brought in contractors to perform Machinist work at the Jenkes Shop in North Little Rock, Arkansas. After a three year fight that resulted in two arbitration awards in favor of the Union, the Carrier has finally settled the dispute by bringing the work back in house, removing contractors from the property, bulletining a new Machinist position, and paying out $175,000 in claims to the Machinists on the Jenkes Shop roster.

This victory started at the local level. A huge thank you goes out to Local 325 Chairman Robert Roush for enforcing the agreement, staying engaged throughout the process, and working closely with District 19 leadership every step of the way. We also want to recognize APDGC Kenny Krause and General Chairman Heath Jacobs for their work and commitment during this fight.

Victories like this prove one thing clearly: Union Contracts Pay. Strong agreements only matter when members and local leadership are willing to enforce them. The IAM Union continues to invest in developing strong local leadership and a knowledgeable rank and file through one of the only full time union training schools in the labor movement. That commitment is helping build a stronger organization capable of defending our work, protecting our agreements, and winning real results for our members.

Central Pierce Fire & Rescue, Graham Fire & Rescue, and Orting Valley Fire & Rescue have created a Performance Directorate to focus on implementing robust training, safety, professional development, and health and wellness programs for our first responders and administrative staff.

By pooling our resources and expertise, the Performance Directorate is implementing innovative programs to ensure our members have what they need to better serve the community. Programs include:

Standardized training ensures seamless communication and coordination during emergencies, so there’s no confusion when personnel from the different districts work together.

Our unique training engine academy, Engine 41, allows recruits to work on a fire engine starting day one. With a 2:1 ratio of officers to recruits, the training engine first teaches the recruits textbook curriculum and then they respond alongside our other crews—exposing them to environmental factors and different types of stress during an emergency.

A career development program is being created to provide clear pathways for our team members and the building blocks to grow and succeed in the fire service.

We are creating an internal Health & Wellness Clinic for our members with access to Doctors, Counselors, and a Strength & Conditioning Coach. This proactive approach ensures members’ health is prioritized, offering treatments, physicals, screenings, and comprehensive support from academy to retirement.

Together, we’re building a stronger, healthier, more cohesive fire service that benefits everyone we serve.
