It’s Thanksgiving Week and we want to give special thanks to Fabian ReimAir for composing the original music for The Weight of Silk. A frequent SDC collaborator (he created the score for A Liminal Space and provided introductory music to Vanishing Act), Fabian consistently contributes emotional depth to our dance films. A dancer himself (currently a First Soloist with English National Ballet where he has been since 2002) Fabian has an innate movement sensibility which enables him to naturally bring a choreographer’s vision to life.
“From the very beginning, it was clear that I would be composing for piano and violin. Bruno wanted to preserve the atmosphere and mood of his original choreography, *Anamnesis*. To accompany Noelani on her emotional journey through time and to give the film a unique and nostalgic sound, I blended four different types of piano and incorporated a field recording of real rain as ambient background noise. You can hear the sky clearing up as the story unfolds.”

From Stage to Screen…For SDC's final film project, Noelani Pantastico and Bruno Roque chose to revisit 'Anamnesis' - a work created together in 2018 for On the Boards' SOLO Festival, and restaged for SDC's debut a year later. The personal stories of Anamnesis provided fertile ground for cinematographic imagery and the film medium opened up new possibilities to dive deeper into the work.
The camera offers an intimacy not possible on stage, with close-ups conveying nuanced emotion, while skillful editing produces quickly shifting environments to palpable effect. Most of the narrative remains intact from the original piece, with one key change to incorporate a more hopeful ending.
The Weight of Silk premieres this Thursday, November 21, at SeattleDanceCollective.org

Bruno Roque’s choreography is familiar to SDC audiences, beginning with Frugivery and Anamnesis for Program One in 2019, followed by The Space Between Us and A Liminal Space. For this screen adaptation of Anamnesis, the choreography is essentially unchanged from the original stage version, yet the way it is used in the film is new and inventive. Bruno thinks of it as "same ingredients, different dish and cooking method." Repeated phrases appear in starkly different environments, lending a sense of both continuity and emotional emphasis throughout the storytelling.
“The movement in the piece is more about intention and less about dance technique, which helps tell my stories and connect to the human experience in a powerful way,” says dancer Noelani Pantastico.

Seattle Dance Collective (SDC) was founded in 2019 by PNB principal dancers Noelani Pantastico and James Moore. The initial impetus came from their mutual desire to curate shows enabling them to work directly with certain choreographers and perform specific pieces that, to date, had eluded them. During the early, formative conversations, Noelani and James quickly expanded their organizational vision to include a commitment to create unique opportunities for dancers and choreographers to collaborate for artistic inspiration and growth. In addition to furthering the development of artists, SDC is also dedicated to expanding audiences and deepening their understanding of the art form. Through thought-provoking programs, SDC aims to provide the community with new access to the transformative power of dance.
