During her residency, Hayla () will explore genealogy, class preservation, the legacy of miscegenation, and the correspondence of race relations with crime, spectacle, and entertainment. Through sculpture, video, and performance, her project will ground itself in the idiom of “unholy matrimony,” and the subtle matriculations of this idea which infers a god-fearing rejection of unequal or unnatural pairings.

Hayla Ragland is a Seattle-based intermedia artist. She received a BFA in Studio Art and a BA in Psychology from University of Kentucky, where she was a John R. Gaines Fellow for the Humanities. The artist’s practice is responsive to her work in social and cognitive psychology, including work at the Markey Cancer Center, the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging and as a caregiver. Her artwork maintains concerns for cognition, behavior, and health, and their interventionary roles in social constructs and racialized histories. Using textile, sculpture, and photography, Ragland constructs motifs of the unsound body, investigating the seat of the grotesque in contemporary visual culture, with respect to race, gender, ability, and mediated conceptions of worth.

“Unholy Matrimony” is a collaborative project between local artists Brandon Haley, Jared Plumacher, Jared Squires, Zayne Henderson, and Oxbow resident visual artist, Hayla Ragland ().

An instrumental performance of Blood on the Leaves by Kanye West, a track which samples Nina Simone’s cover of Strange Fruit, will be accompanied by poplar sculpture, photographic drawings, and projections to share in a dialogue on entanglement, spectacle, and darkness.

The performances will take place Friday, May 21st between 7pm - 9pm. The rest of the work will be on view during visiting hours from 12 to 6pm Tues./Thurs. May 25th and 27th.

Since 2015, Oxbow has been a place for visual artists, performance artists, choreographers and composers to experiment, to play with ideas, to cross disciplines, to try things that might not work out.

The pandemic impacted our ability to support this project financially and as a result, the residency program is coming to an end. A new tenant will be taking over the office and gallery space while we focus on our fabrication business.

We're deeply grateful to all of the artists who brought their ideas and energy to the space. We are grateful for the friendships and connections made that will long outlast the physical space.
