The date 1/1/70 has an internal value of zero on a Unix system. So, when iOS tries to display past dates (text messages etc) it gets a negative number and crashes. Thanks to 4Chan, tons of people set their iPhone's clock to Jan 1st, 1970 expecting an easter egg and instead got a brick.
Popping and reconnecting the battery connector takes all of 10 seconds and will un-brick your iPhone. You'll need a pentalobe screwdriver to get at it, if you don't have one, feel free to borrow one of ours!
