The theme of this week is interleaved practice! If you’ve never tried interleaved practice before, I hope you’ll try it this week. It has been the biggest game-changer for me personally in terms of how quickly I can learn music and how consistent I am on stage. Today’s tip is a way to test different sections for performance readiness. Use this on music you’ve practiced and are getting ready to perform. 🎶 Exciting News! 🎶 NOCCO’s 2024 Concerto Competition is open! 🎻✨ This is a fantastic opportunity for high-school age musicians to perform with and lead a conductorless chamber orchestra. The competition is in two rounds: a YouTube video submission due in early August and a live final round held in Seattle in September. 🚨There are a few important changes that you should be aware of🚨:
▫️we encourage the performance of music in the public domain, but may accept works outside of that as long as the performer is willing to assume the cost of music rental ($500-$1000). Also, when choosing repertoire, please keep in mind orchestration limits for an orchestra of our size.

3 powerful women hornists lead the way this weekend Symphony Tacoma

We are thrilled to welcome Leelanee Sterrett Third Horn with the New York Philharmonic performing a world premiere by our own former Assistant Principal Hornist, composer and Pacific Lutheran University professor, Gina Gillie in Reverie. (written to be accessible to hornists with focal dystonia.

The rest of the program is also very cool! (De Falla, Marquez & Kodaly!)

Being a former hornist myself, I fondly recall playing Strauss’s Concerto No.1 & can’t wait to hear Leelanee’s expressive rendition of it. Being often the only woman in the band as a young hornist, I know very well the journey of these women and what they have broken through - it’s not long ago that women broke into professional orchestras, onto the podium, into the repertoire fully as voices finally being heard. Let’s celebrate the gifts we have and never let them be silenced, mistreated or taken advantage of.

Gillie’s compositions are known as works that resonate with emotional depth and I feel that in every note she writes - an absolutely gorgeous, lush string and horn work!

Leelanee’s artistry illuminates concert halls around the world, enchanting audiences with her lyrical expressiveness and she is also known for her dedication to education and outreach, inspiring young musicians through masterclasses, workshops, and community engagement initiatives.

Tremendous and deserved that we now have more women in key positions in major orchestras and as university professors! I cannot wait to hear all of the hard work that will show up beautifully & powerfully in this weekend’s concert!!

Note that at certain stages of learning a skill, you may very well find that an internal focus of attention is more useful than an external focus. However, especially when a skill is well-learned, research over the last couple decades in all sorts of areas, from sports to music, have found that focusing more on your end-goal (sound, phrasing, etc.), and less on the physical mechanics of how to produce that desired goal leads to more accurate and effective performance. So it’s certainly worth experimenting with, if this feels new to you! This is actually something we’ll spend a week exploring more deeply in the upcoming live Performance Psych Essentials class, with various types of focus strategies that can not only help with playing more effectively, but help with getting into “the zone” more consistently as well.
