Icho Ryu
Icho Ryu Aikibudo
Icho Ryu is the creation of Bernie Lau, a retired Seattle police officer, who developed methods based upon his martial arts training to meet his needs as a police officer and to serve as a self-defense system for civilians.
John Spiers, an old friend from the early days of aikido in Seattle, passed away this last weekend. John was a great guy and will be missed by all who knew him through the years.
John was a student of Bernie's in those early days and was very helpful and supportive to me in my early years of training. Though life took us in different directions, John and I would always get together sporadically to have a beer or 3 and reminisce or talk about how to help Bernie through some of his difficulties in life. John held a 4dan in Icho ryu and always seemed to find a dojo someplace in his travels for work.
From all of us in Icho ryu who knew John, our thoughts and sympathy go out to his family and friends.
Sad to report that Don Angier passed away from heart complications according to his Soke -Dai of Yanagi Ryu, Jeremy Breazeale. I'll post some pictures of Don once I get a chance to scan them for a trip down memory lane for those who knew Don.

I am considering a new beginners series starting on April 2, 2013. This would be a 3 month session to help build a student's ability to learn as well as build physical conditioning for success in martial arts. Whether we do this class or not is going to be based on the level of responses I receive. This series will be taught by not only myself but by senior students in Icho Ryu.
Class time would be 6:15 to 7:30 on Tuesdays and the option for other classes on Thursday and Saturday will be at the discretion of the Thursday Budo Tanren and Saturday Icho Ryu class teachers.
If you are interested in participation, Please contact me via the contact links on the "About Icho Ryu" page on the Seattle School of Aikido website: http://www.seattleschoolofaikido.org/about_icho_ryu

Icho Ryu 3 month Beginners Series October 2, 2012
Once again proof people are weird. Enough requests for a beginners series over the last few months and to support the aikido beginners series here at SSA, we once again offer an introductory class.
Beginners series class starts at 6:15 and runs to 7:30. For those interested in being weird, The beginners series is designed to give a taste of what is needed to learn martial arts. This is a 3 month course and consists of:
-Conditioning exercises
-Basic skills in ukemi, which I like to translate as "learning to fall down and getting back up".
-Basic etiquette, also known as "How to keep from getting someone mad at you in a dojo"
-Introduction to a basic techniques.
The goal of this class is to progress the student to senior classes or to simply provide a glimpse of what Icho Ryu considers to be basics needed for growth and success in budo training.
You can find out more by visiting the Seattle School of aikido website at www.seattleschoolofaikido.org Or leave me a message here on facebook.

Assorted photos from over the years
Found more photos, so will be scanning in over the next few days.
12 people in beginners class on Tuesday. I don't know what happened. Expecting another newbie next week. Did someone sign up Icho Ryu on e- Harmony or something?
More photos added to Budo Friends. More to come as I dig through the pile.
