We had so much fun with students at The Northwest School making box kites for an installation in Freeway Park. Thanks Office of Arts & Culture Seattle and Freeway Park Association! The kites will be illuminated in the park next week. Come check them out.

LTDC was invited to participate in Seattle Art Museum's Second Annual Lights Festival with a participatory art installation. The brief was to create an art activity that incorporated light: reflection, shadow, illumination, etc. SAM was particularly excited about our participation because our work has been responsive to site and the environment.
For our project we took inspiration from bioluminescent sea creatures who generate light in the darkness of the deep sea, particularly siphonophores.. A siphonophore is a bioluminescent ocean creature often found at great depths. It resembles and acts as a single organism, but is in fact a community of highly specialized individuals acting in concert to benefit the whole.
This idea led us to create, essentially, an enormous Light Bright, which was shaped like a giant cephalopod. The form was illuminated from the inside with 500+ 3" holes drilled into it. Each hole was covered with a dark circle of paper. Participants were invited to create their own "light signature" on a piece of vellum using a select color palette. They then chose a location for their piece, removed the dark paper covering and affixed their work to the dynamic and every brightening communal sculpture.
This rainy day has us thinking about last winter's light installation at the SAM Sculpture Park. It was a magical evening! We are working on a light installation at Freeway Park this winter too - so we'll keep you posted!

Some questions for all you designers and planners out there in the States! In December I, Maria Taylor, gave an open lecture at Siberian Federal University on ecological approaches in American landscape architecture, focusing on Seattle, Denver, and New York. The questions I got from the audience at the end were apt, astute and at times beyond my ability to answer immediately. What I'd like to do is turn some of the questions over to you, Friends of The Light Table Design Collective, and start some international design conversation. Just in time for the Olympics! So please check out the attached album, and comment on the threaded topics that you know best. And feel free to add some questions of your own, if you'd like to know more about how landscape and urban design are practiced here in Siberia. I will also invite some of my colleagues here to join the discussion. Dogovorilis?
