If you like purple, you might get a kick out of the amethyst tones in this table top. We managed this by fine-tuning the ebonizing process, and we’re delighted with the result! This is salvaged oak, with new color drama, set on our black steel LegX base.

Anyone else feeling the need for spring? Here’s a from early March last year: a live-edge juniper tablescape celebrating the brave early blooms of forsythia, winter cherry, and tulip tree. Enough of winter already!

Remember the console table we posted recently, with brown wood base (top photo)? Well, our final decision was to ebonize the base to deep black. We think it adds dramatic elegance and enhances the “floating” effect of the live-edge top. Which do you prefer? We’re curious to know!

Really enjoyed meeting new people and seeing old friends at our Artisan Popup at Second Use Building Materials. We never get tired of talking about the creative possibilities of wood, and people who come to Second Use are already thinking out of the box! Reuse, salvage, recycle, upcycle—it’s all a great adventure, and even better when shared with a community. Our coffee tables and tablescapes will be available for sale at Second Use through March 8. Look through all the pics to see great finds in the rest of the store. Were else would you find a glass-bottle chandelier, 100% recycled paint, and a vintage Singer sewing machine in perfect working order?

And we’re happy to support Second Use in their mission: “We salvage materials and their stories, from the community, to the community. Our goal is to make salvage and reuse intuitive, accessible and fun." Hear, hear! We look forward to seeing you there.

Out of the workshop and into the sunset yesterday, just in time to catch the last gleam of sunset—and some great improvisations for sleds. Overheard, as someone started downhill: “Try to avoid the green spots!” Yes, it’s winter in Seattle. :)

Steel bases are all the rage, but we do love wood, and sometimes wood is what really works! Here, a gorgeous maple burl top “floats” over a walnut wood base that highlights the darker accents of the burl. Voila, a new custom console table.

Finishing up the sound box, to match the light box of the two-piece octagon-themed ensemble, in rich walnut tones and textures. Playing and designing with the natural patterns of the wood is one of the great pleasures of woodworking.
Roughing it: Using a rasp—not a Festool—for a rustic effect on the live edge of a walnut table destined for a cabin. These are the nitty-gritty moments that make woodworking fun.
