Finishing treatment is a huge milestone, but it’s okay if life after cancer still feels uncertain or overwhelming. Many survivors share that things can feel as challenging now as they did at diagnosis—with routines changing and new questions arising.

You’re not alone on this journey. At Cancer Pathways, we welcome every survivor’s unique story. Our free support groups, one-on-one counseling, and resources are here to help you—and your loved ones—find community, guidance, and even moments of hope and laughter as you define your new normal. 🫂

We had a wonderful time connecting with students at Thomas Jefferson High School’s health fair, where we explored what’s really inside a v**e together. Many were surprised to learn about chemicals like acetone and formaldehyde that can be found in some v**es!

We believe every teen deserves free, accurate, and engaging education—so we’ve created programs like Cancer Happens and Quit the Nic to empower students with information and real-world skills. If you know a student who might be interested, visit cancerpathways.org/programs/student-education/ or email [email protected] to register your school today.

When should you start thinking about clinical trials?

Right away. From the moment of diagnosis, there may be a trial available — no matter where you are in your treatment journey.

"There's a trial for every patient at every phase of their treatment." — Dr. Crowley
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
How does a drug actually get from the lab to becoming a treatment?

🔬 Pre-Clinical — Lab & animal testing, then an IND filing with the FDA
🧪 Phase 1 — Safety & dosing (20–40 patients)
🧪 Phase 2 — Early efficacy in a larger trial group
🧪 Phase 3 — The new treatment vs. the current standard of care (hundreds to thousands of patients)
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
A few myths Dr. Crowley cleared up:

❓ "Will I get a placebo?"

In cancer trials, placebos are rare. Every participant receives at minimum the standard of care. Those in the experimental group receive the new treatment on top of that.
"There are very few placebo-controlled trials in cancer. Placebo is rare." — Dr. Crowley

❓ "What will it cost me?"

The trial itself covers the cost of treatment — but travel and lodging aren't always reimbursed. This is a real health equity issue, since financial barriers can limit who gets to participate. Ask your care team what financial support your institution offers.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The biggest takeaway: You can — and should — ask about clinical trials. Don't wait for your doctor to bring it up.
"I would urge patients and their caretakers to do their own research and present it to their oncologists." — Dr. Crowley

Did you know that there's a clinical trial available for every patient, at every phase of treatment?

That's one of the many things we learned from Dr. Crowley during last week's guest lecture on clinical trials. From how the research process works, to the costs of participating, to why self-advocacy matters — our community came with great questions and Dr. Crowley delivered.

We've distilled the key takeaways into this carousel, including resources available here in Washington State and nationwide. Whether you're newly diagnosed or supporting a loved one, this one's worth a read.
