Juneau is grappling with heightened avalanche danger after a week of record-shattering snowfall that has also led to sunken vessels across the city and borough.

The deluge has far surpassed historical benchmarks. The previous monthly record of 54.7 inches, set in 1964, has been eclipsed, with December totals now exceeding 80 inches. In a typical year, Juneau averages roughly 80 to 81 inches of snowfall in total.

According to the National Weather Service, the city has also broken its five-day snowfall record. Speaking to reporters Wednesday, Ferrin said the old mark of 45.9 inches—set in April 1963—has now been surpassed during this extraordinary stretch of winter weather.
