Seattle Fair Trade is a locally operated fair trade, non-profit retail store. This includes supporting our local Pacific Northwest artisans.
Our Story
In 1991, Seattle Fair Trade began as Ten Thousand Villages – Seattle, a branch of the national organization Ten Thousand Villages. This movement unofficially started in the 1940s by Edna Ruth Blyer, a Mennonite woman in Pennsylvania. The Beginning
While on vacation in Puerto Rico with her husband, Edna discovered beautiful embroidery crafted by women from La Plata. Struck by the beauty of these textiles, she brought pieces back home to sell to her neighbors and friends, giving birth to Ten Thousand Villages. Part of Something Bigger
Ten Thousand Villages became a founding member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO). It started in downtown Seattle near Pike Place Market but eventually found its home in the thriving Roosevelt neighborhood in 2000. The Evolution
In 2023, we decided to branch out on our own to promote fair trade products by artisans globally, going beyond the scope of Ten Thousand Villages. We proudly became Seattle Fair Trade. Our Community
We are a vibrant community of volunteers, board members, and dedicated staff. Beyond our retail space, we host events and pop-up markets in the area, showcasing work by regional artists. With the support of our patrons and loyal customers, we sell fair trade goods from around the world, fostering income and recognition for the artisans. Our Vision
Seattle Fair Trade is more than just a store. We aim to be a center for fair trade in Seattle, connecting our community with artisans from around the world. We're proud to support both global artisans and our talented local artists, contributing to their success and celebrating their incredible work.

Seattle Fair Trade will be hosting local illustrator Suzi Spooner on September 28th 1-5pm for a pop-up event featuring her work!
Suzi is a q***r artist creating colorful, whimsical art for frog fans, book hoarders, and colorful characters of all genders. She sells her artwork as prints, stickers, enamel pins, tote bags, and bandanas.

Examined Life: A Western Washington Poets Network Anthology features the work of forty poets from the Canadian border to the Columbia River. An additional fifteen poets appear in three Good Word Walking supplements to the anthology. The book and supplements will be available that evening.
