New song “Stumbling” out now!

About:

“Stumbling” was written on the heels of the global pandemic and the ensuing lockdown and erasure of life as we knew it. It was unbearably opaque when life would return and whether I’d even get to hug my parents again…it was a time of universal anxiety and dread which needs no further recounting I’m sure. But alas, in all this wild darkness, time slowed and writing came readily.

My long time friend and musical accomplice Sam Miller called with a proposition that we’d partner up to release a Matt Badger debut album (which we’d made nearly ten years prior) on a label he was creating which would become Jenny Invert Records. This offer, from one of my dearest friends and musical influences in my formative years as a songwriter, was more significant to me than any words could express. He’d reached across the country amidst all that mad darkness of the time and gave me direction. His belief in me provided a light to walk through it all on a path which was our own. The process was invigorating, hopeful, and galvanizing. The world continued to burn with more intensity, distant at first, and then close as my own city. The way out of the mess of the world was tenuous at best and the words for this song came as a reflection of what it felt to be a part of a civilization that seemed every day to stumble mightily along the path towards coping, recovery, and healing. I dusted off my old desktop and loaded up my 2011 Cubase software and began working to build a way to cope through music, as so many of us in the community did.

“Stumbling” is the first song I completed during this time which I felt could carry me a little bit further through the darkness and, soon after, more songs came. It’s a time capsule for me looking back into that indescribable time, and ultimately the result of a gift of resilience born out of a moment of true friendship.
