“It’s an encouragement for folks to think about the stories we’re telling ourselves, the stories that we accept, the realities we accept, and maybe pushing if not demanding people to try to change those realities any way they can.”

In ’s How Do I Look? she addresses that vain, mundane question, digging past glossy platitudes and flattering exaggerations into the hot mess of perception, subjectivity, identity and taste. It throws itself into the space, sometimes a chasm, between how we see ourselves and how the world sees us.

5/8) - Dance and Drag
“I use dance and drag to explore this very contested, very multiplicities concept we call femininity. How Do I look is more in the realm of contemporary dance and contemporary art that allows me to slow down, inquire, get weird, get funky, get inquisitive in different ways.”

IT’S FINALLY HERE!
We’ve been working steadily away to fold the feedback from our generous community into a clear, actionable Strategic Plan and could not be more grateful to everyone who helps us be who we are.
Thank you in particular to the 291 artists, staff, board, and audience members, patrons and peers who shared so generously with us through this process.
Thank you to Andy Fife Consulting for helping us navigate the enormity of this work.
There will be much more to share in the coming days, weeks, years...and we are thrilled with what we have in store.

Monique Jenkinson, creator of the upcoming show How Do I Look? at On The Boards, published a memoir-in-essays entitled “Faux Queen: A Life in Drag” in 2022.
Amelia Williams of SFGate described these essays as a recounting of “a Gen-X upbringing that prepared her for San Francisco's drag world and the q***r communities from which it sprang and continues to evolve.”
Come see the latest evolution of Monique’s self-exploration and creative expression in her newest work:
