Fine art advisory services for individuals, philanthropists and public art programs

10/20/2020

This month, META ARTE turned 15 years old, a moment to consider and celebrate - while distracted by the challenges of the day, from the pandemic to the elections. This month also brings good news to the arts in Seattle. I have been working with the Friday Foundation for a couple of years now, and today it announced the first round of gifts honoring Jane Lang Davis and Richard E. Lang.

Dawoud Bey's project for UW Tacoma recognized by the Public Art Network of Americans for the Arts 10/23/2017

Four years ago, Kurt Kiefer with META ARTE curated a public art installation for the UW Tacoma Campus through ArtsWA, commissioning Dawoud Bey to create new work. This was a great experience for all, and the UW Tacoma has a great installation by the newly - and rightly - celebrated artist, who was just awarded a MacArthur Foundation fellowship.

Opinion | Modern African Art Is Being Gentrified 05/22/2017

Interesting article - the issue is not only the displacement of artworks from their origins, but more pointedly, the lack of such representation there. This could also apply to Latin America.

Opinion | Modern African Art Is Being Gentrified This is good for the artists, but the rest of Africa will lose out.

A quote in Bloomberg / Businessweek Advisers to the Ultra-Rich Try to Treat Art as Just Another Asset The issue of collecting for investment deserves discussion. I am weary when the conversation veers away from art and what art does and can do, to focus solely on financial return. Of course, a collector should acquire with an

Artist Trust Strategic Plan: A Letter from Our Board President 09/09/2016

Artist Trust Strategic Plan: A Letter from Our Board President As we celebrate the first 30 years of Artist Trust, we also look at the future.

As the new President of the Board of Artist Trust, I am thinking about those who have been in this position – Karen Guzak, Will Rava, Susan Wagner – and from whom I’ve learned, and especially about the most recent President, Stephanie Ellis-Smith, who has been simply (and complexly as need be) brilliant at it.

I love this organization – not just because it supports artists; most importantly because it is about a community supporting its artists in order to become a stronger, more interesting, better community. The Artist Trust mission says it well; https://artisttrust.org/index.php/about/mission.

I am now on my third board term, having first served in the late-90s, and back since 2012. This year we’ll be celebrating Artist Trust’s 30th birthday. We have an engaged board and a great staff, led by Shannon Halberstadt.

I am honored to take on this role, and invite all to become members of Artist Trust, to be friends of the organization, and to be funders of the great work being done.

Welcome to our new Board Members Heather Joy Helbach-Olds, Mariella Luz, and Sarah Traver + new Board President Pablo Schugurensky! http://ow.ly/1qg6302ihzZ

In Seattle, Microsoft Alums Foster an Art Scene that Defies Tech-Collector Stereotypes 07/27/2015

In Seattle, Microsoft Alums Foster an Art Scene that Defies Tech-Collector Stereotypes Pablo Schugurensky is not a suit. He may have managed the art collections of some of Seattle’s business-world behemoths (namely, Microsoft and its co-founder Paul Allen’s multi-billion-dollar private holding company, Vulcan Inc.), but his origins here are far from corporate. Even in a place where th…
